Two Major Controversies Rock PSL 2026 as Lahore Qalandars Face Security and Ball-Tampering Probe
The Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2026 has found itself under intense scrutiny after two major controversies involving Lahore Qalandars players emerged within days of each other. The first involved a hotel security breach linked to Sikandar Raza and Shaheen Shah Afridi, while the second centered on an alleged ball-tampering incident involving Fakhar Zaman during a crucial match.
Together, the incidents have raised serious concerns about discipline, security, and the league's overall image.

PSL hotel security controversy: What happened?
The hotel controversy began when four visitors reportedly entered the Lahore Qalandars team hotel despite security restrictions. According to reports cited by Punjab Police, permission had earlier been requested to allow the visitors into the hotel room, but the request was denied by authorities.
Despite this refusal, the visitors were allegedly escorted into the hotel by Lahore Qalandars players. The police report stated that the visitors remained inside the room for several hours, raising questions about whether official security protocols were knowingly violated.
Zimbabwe all-rounder Sikandar Raza later broke his silence and took responsibility for the incident. He clarified that the visitors were his long-time friends and family members and insisted that Shaheen Shah Afridi only helped him escort them to the room at his request.
Raza emphasized that Afridi did not force entry or act independently, stating that the responsibility lay entirely with him. He also explained that he wanted to meet his close family privately rather than in public areas of the hotel.
Meanwhile, sources indicated that Lahore Qalandars acknowledged the incident internally but denied any forced entry. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) also confirmed it was aware of the situation and was in communication with PSL officials regarding further action.
PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi reportedly expressed dissatisfaction over the incident, particularly because PSL 2026 has been operating under heightened security arrangements and restricted fan access at venues.
Ball-tampering controversy: What happened and latest updates
While the hotel issue was still unfolding, another controversy surfaced during Lahore Qalandars' match against Karachi Kings involving alleged ball tampering.
The incident occurred just before the final over of Karachi's run chase. With Karachi needing 14 runs from six balls, umpires noticed suspicious handling of the ball during a discussion involving Shaheen Afridi, Fakhar Zaman, and Haris Rauf.
Following an inspection, officials ruled that the condition of the ball had been altered deliberately. As per cricket laws, the umpires awarded Karachi Kings five penalty runs and replaced the ball.
The penalty proved decisive, reducing the required target and allowing Karachi to complete the chase with ease. The result intensified scrutiny on Lahore players and sparked widespread debate across cricket circles.
Subsequently, Fakhar Zaman was formally charged with a Level 3 offence under the PSL Code of Conduct for allegedly altering the ball's condition. According to PCB statements, Fakhar denied the charge during a disciplinary hearing led by match referee Roshan Mahanama.
A second hearing has been scheduled, with the final verdict expected after reviewing video footage and match evidence. If found guilty, Fakhar could face sanctions ranging from fines to possible match suspensions.
Why these controversies matter for PSL 2026
The back-to-back nature of these incidents has created mounting pressure on PSL authorities. With the league already operating under strict conditions and limited crowd access, officials are concerned about the negative attention surrounding both off-field and on-field discipline.
PCB officials have indicated that maintaining strict security standards and protecting the integrity of the game remain top priorities. The outcomes of ongoing investigations into both the hotel security breach and the ball-tampering allegations are expected to play a significant role in shaping how PSL handles discipline going forward.
