Under-19 World Cup 2024: India thrash Bangladesh, Pakistan and England also register comfortable wins

Under-19 World Cup 2024: India defeated Bangladesh by 84 runs in their first match of the Under-19 World Cup at Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein on Saturday, January 20.

India were asked to bat first by Bangladesh in the Group A encounter as they finished at 251/7. India were two down for 31 but a 116-run partnership between opener Adarsh Singh (76) and captain Uday Sharan (64) brought the momentum back in India's favour.

Wicktkeeper-batter Aravelly Avanish (23 off 17) and Sachin Dhas (26* off 20) played quickfire knocks to take India past 250. In reply, Bangladesh lost three wickets in the powerplay and were later reduced to 50/4 in 14.4 overs

A 77-run partnership between Ariful Islam (41) and Mohammad Shihab James (54) took Bangladesh past 100, but their innings again faltered after Musheer Khan dismissed the former in the 35th over. Bangladesh lost their last six wickets for 40 runs to get bundled out for 167 in 45.5 overs.

Left-arm spinner Saumy Pandey starred with the ball once again. He registered figures of 4/24 in 9.5 overs. Musheer Khan's left-arm spin bowling also fetched India two wickets.

Elsewhere, Pakistan thrashed Afghanistan by 181 runs in their first Group D match in East London. Opting to bat first after winning the toss, Pakistan finished at 284/9 in 50 overs on the back of a hundred from opener Shahzaib Khan (106 off 126). Afghanistan leg-spinner picked four wickets for 51 runs in 10 overs.

In reply, Afghanistan got all out for 1-3 in 26.2 overs. Pacer Ubaid Shah picked four wickets, while Mohammad Zeeshan registered three scalps.

In the third match of the day, England U19 handed Scotland U19 a seven-wicket defeat. Off-spinner Farhan Ahmed and leg-spinner Luc Benkenstein picked three wickets apiece to help England wrap up Scotland's innings at 174 in 49.2 overs.

England chased down the target for the loss of seven wickets in 26.2 overs. Opener Ben McKinney top-scored with 88 runs off 68 balls. Ibrahim Fasal picked two of the three wickets for Scotland.
