UP T20 League: Uttar Pradesh Police Files FIR Against 2 People in Betting Scandal, Raises Concerns Over Betting Apps Sponsor

By Indranil Basu

The Uttar Pradesh Police have lodged FIR against at least two individuals in connection with a betting scandal related to the UP T20 League, according to sources on Sunday. It is unclear whether the accused individuals have any direct or indirect links to the league. While none of the UPCA officials have commented on the matter, board sources have confirmed the arrests.

This incident brings to light concerns about illegal betting activities surrounding the league, but further investigations are needed to clarify the full extent of the involvement. The Indian cricket board (BCCI) is concerned with the UP developments and investigations are on to nab the culprit.

UP T20 League Betting Scandal

The involvement of surrogate betting apps as sponsors in various state T20 leagues across India has raised concerns within the BCCI. Despite clear directives from the BCCI advising state associations to avoid partnerships with companies involved in betting, several state leagues are allegedly continuing such associations.

"Not all states are involved in this racket. There are a couple of states who aren't doing that. This is rampant and has to stop," a board source said while explaining the dos and don'ts.

This situation has come under the scrutiny of the BCCI's Anti-Corruption Unit, highlighting the ongoing challenge of enforcing the board's guidelines at the state level. The practice of using surrogate sponsorship-where betting companies promote themselves through seemingly unrelated businesses to bypass legal restrictions-poses ethical and legal challenges.

The BCCI's concern reflects the need to maintain the integrity of the sport and avoid any associations that could be perceived as endorsing gambling, which is heavily regulated and often illegal in many parts of India. The continued presence of these sponsors in state leagues suggests potential loopholes in enforcement or differing priorities at the state level, which could lead to tensions between the BCCI and state associations.

The BCCI maintains a clear distinction between fantasy cricket apps and betting apps, allowing the former to be associated with Indian cricket while strictly prohibiting the latter. Fantasy cricket apps are widely accepted and have become major sponsors in various cricketing events, including the IPL, reflecting their perceived legitimacy and alignment with the board's policies.

However, when it comes to betting apps, the BCCI has a strict "no" policy. This stance was evident even when the IPL began, as the board swiftly acted against a company managing the IPL website and mobile rights due to its connections with a betting syndicate. The BCCI's quick intervention ensures its commitment to preventing any affiliations that could compromise the integrity of Indian cricket or promote illegal gambling activities.

This clear stance from the BCCI helps to protect the sport's reputation and maintain public trust. The issue of surrogate sponsorships from betting-related entities in state leagues, as mentioned earlier, further emphasizes the challenges the board faces in enforcing these regulations consistently across different levels of cricket in India.

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has categorically told the state cricket associations that they must ensure no sponsors with ties to surrogate betting syndicates are involved in their events. This directive aligns with the BCCI's and the Indian government's firm stance against betting, which remains illegal in India despite ongoing debates and suggestions, such as those from Justice (retired) R.M. Lodha, about legalizing and regulating it.

The continued presence of such sponsors in state T20 leagues raises serious concerns about compliance with BCCI guidelines and the integrity of the sport. While the BCCI has been vocal about its position, whether it will take concrete action against these state associations for breaching these directives is still uncertain.

The situation puts the spotlight on the board's ability to enforce its rules uniformly across all levels of cricket in India and could lead to potential disciplinary measures if the associations are found to be in violation of these regulations.
