Updated WTC Points Table After Australia vs Bangladesh 1st Test: Historic Win Lifts Shanto-led Side to Fourth

Darwin, August 16: Bangladesh's historic nine-wicket hammering of Australia in the first Test in Darwin has made some significant changes at the top of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 points table, with the visitors climbing to fourth while Australia retained the top position despite suffering their second defeat of the cycle.

Najmul Hossain Shanto-led side now have a 66.67 points percentage (PCT) from five Tests, having won three, lost one and drawn one. Their victory over Australia has put them firmly into contention for a place in the WTC final and moved them above India in the current standings.

Australia, led by Pat Cummins, remain at the top with a 77.78 PCT. They have played nine Tests, winning seven and losing two. Their defeat in Darwin has reduced their advantage over the chasing teams, with South Africa and New Zealand occupying second and third respectively.

WTC 2025-27 Points Table on August 16

India - who are locking horns with Sri Lanka in Galle - remain fifth with a 48.15 PCT after nine Tests, with four wins, four defeats and one draw. Their position makes the ongoing two-Test series against Sri Lanka particularly important as they look to improve their qualification prospects.

The WTC standings are determined by the percentage of available points earned rather than the total number of points, because teams play different numbers of Tests during the championship cycle. Bangladesh's 66.67 PCT now puts them only 11.11 percentage points behind Australia.

The second Test between Australia and Bangladesh in Mackay, beginning on August 22, will therefore have major implications at both ends of the top-four race. A second Bangladesh victory could bring the visitors even closer to the leading teams, while Australia will be looking to restore the advantage they held before the Darwin defeat.

For India, the equation is equally straightforward: with the team currently fifth, every Test victory from here becomes increasingly important if they are to remain in contention for another WTC final appearance.
