UPT20 League 2026: How Ekana Stadium’s 45-Minute Rain Turnaround Ensured Zero Washouts in Lucknow

While heavy rains and wet outfields have forced the abandonment of numerous matches across various domestic tournaments this season, the Lucknow leg of the UP T20 League 2026 has stood out for its uninterrupted cricketing action. Despite frequent and heavy downpours during this first phase of Season 4, Lucknow's international-standard Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium successfully hosted all 22 scheduled matches without a single washout.

While rain delays necessitated shortened games and DLS method interventions, the exceptional efforts of the ground staff ensured that every match yielded a result. This remarkable feat highlights the world-class infrastructure provided by the UPCA and the meticulous preparation behind the UP T20 League in Lucknow.

Sanjeev Agarwal, Chief Curator at the Ekana Stadium, shed light on the mechanics and dedication that kept the tournament running smoothly.

"The drainage system at the Ekana Stadium was exceptionally well-designed during its construction, and we maintain it rigorously," Agarwal explained. "Often, excellent drainage systems fail over time due to poor day-to-day upkeep, which leads to blockages in the herringbone piping and slows down water infiltration. However, our daily routine maintenance prevents this. Regardless of the rain's intensity, we can prepare the ground for play within a maximum of 45 minutes after the showers stop."

The secret to this rapid turnaround extends far beyond match days. Agarwal revealed that the groundwork for this uninterrupted season was laid months in advance, immediately following the conclusion of the IPL.

"The ground demands daily care, whether there is a match scheduled or not," Agarwal noted. "Following the IPL, we undertook a comprehensive pre-season maintenance program following BCCI guidelines and turf science protocols. While this process usually takes 15 days, we dedicated 32 days this year. We performed deep tining and coring to significantly accelerate the water infiltration rate, ensuring surface water drains out rapidly."

The tireless work of the ground staff has drawn widespread praise from players, cricket administrators, and fans, especially when contrasted with the frequent washouts seen in other regional leagues. Addressing the accolades, Agarwal remained focused on the task at hand.

"We are incredibly grateful for the appreciation from cricket fans and the media. Our primary responsibility is to maintain the ground and provide a top-quality surface for the players to meet international benchmarks," Agarwal stated. "My sole focus is always on delivering a dry outfield and a ready pitch as quickly as possible so that precious playing time is not lost."

With the highly successful completion of the Lucknow leg, the UP T20 League 2026 now moves to its next phase. The high-stakes action will shift to the iconic Green Park Stadium in Kanpur, a historic venue that has hosted 40 international matches, for the remaining fixtures, the playoffs, and the Grand Finale starting on August 28 until September 6.
