Vaibhav Sooryavanshi IPL 2026: Rajasthan Royals star leaves selectors with a big decision to make
After a record-shattering IPL 2026 season, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has turned the conversation from potential to selection, leaving Indian cricket waiting for just a call-up.
At the start of IPL 2026, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was viewed as a talented teenager with immense promise. Two months later, he has become the biggest talking point in Indian cricket. The 15-year-old Rajasthan Royals opener finished the season with a staggering 776 runs, broke Chris Gayle's record for most sixes in a single IPL edition, and became the first uncapped player to score more than 700 runs in a season.

The Baby Boss has turned what was once a question of potential into a growing demand for an India call-up. Following Rajasthan Royals' defeat to Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 2, Rajasthan Royals Director of Cricket Kumar Sangakkara backed the youngster for international cricket during the post-match press conference.
"Yeah, I mean, you never know if anyone's ready until they play. But with everything Vaibhav has shown against some of the best bowlers in the world, I think he's more than ready to take on any challenge you throw at him," Sangakkara said during the post-match press conference following Rajasthan Royals' IPL 2026 Qualifier 2 defeat to Gujarat Titans.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is rewriting IPL history
The numbers from Sooryavanshi's season are difficult to comprehend. He finished IPL 2026 with 776 runs and an astonishing 67 sixes, surpassing Chris Gayle's long-standing record for the most maximums in a single season. He also became the first player in IPL history to score more than 500 runs in the Powerplay during one campaign, piling up 521 runs at a strike rate of 233.63.
The youngster also became the fastest batter to reach 1000 IPL runs in terms of balls faced, getting there in just 440 deliveries. These are not records reserved for young players. They are records against some of the greatest T20 players the game has seen.
The Vaibhav Sooryavanshi innings that could have been
While the headlines focused on sixes and strike rates, Qualifier 2 may have revealed the most complete version of Suryavanshi. Against a Gujarat Titans attack featuring Mohammed Siraj, Kagiso Rabada and Rashid Khan, he produced a brilliant 96 off 47 balls.
The innings was different from his explosive knocks earlier in the tournament. Gujarat repeatedly tested him with short-pitched bowling while wickets kept falling around him. Instead of attacking recklessly, he adapted. He reached 46 from 25 balls before accelerating and almost single-handedly carrying Rajasthan Royals to a competitive total.
"It was a much tougher innings with wickets falling around him. He reads the game really well, and he's got no fear," Sangakkara said during the same post-match press conference after Rajasthan Royals' loss to Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 2.
776 runs later, he walked away heartbroken
Despite producing another masterpiece, Suryavanshi ended the night disappointed. Rajasthan Royals were eliminated as Gujarat Titans chased down 215 with eight balls to spare.
Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was struck by the youngster's reaction after the game.
"If you looked at his face after the match, you could see the sheer disappointment written all over it. This 15-year-old boy is just a little kid, but in his mind, it is always about winning the game for his team," Ashwin said on his YouTube show Ash Ki Baat while analysing Rajasthan Royals' elimination from IPL 2026.
India's selectors may still have decisions to make, but the debate around Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is rapidly disappearing. After one of the greatest IPL seasons ever produced by an uncapped player, the question is no longer whether he is ready for international cricket. The only question left is when Indian cricket decides to hand him the opportunity.
