Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Draws Sachin Tendulkar Comparisons As Mentor Highlights His Elite Cricket Intelligence

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s rapid rise has impressed long-time mentor Zubin Bharucha, who believes the young batter now carries the self-belief to challenge international attacks. Bharucha feels that the internal shift in confidence, more than any technical tweak, has turned a promising under-19 player into someone ready for bigger stages, even as expectations and scrutiny grow around the teenager’s progress.

Comparisons with Sachin Tendulkar have already appeared, not for stroke-play likeness but for mindset.

Bharucha was quoted by PTI as saying, "In that sense, he reminds me very much of a young Sachin Tendulkar. Not necessarily stylistically, but in terms of maturity and clarity. Some players arrive young in age but already old in understanding. He is one such," underlining Sooryavanshi's unusual cricket awareness.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi confidence and belief growth

Bharucha explained how mental growth has changed Sooryavanshi between the 2025 and 2026 seasons. “The difference now is that his confidence has multiplied,” Bharucha answered. “Earlier, he knew he could dominate U19 bowlers. Now he believes the same methods, the same tempo, and the same instincts can work against international bowlers as well. That internal shift is enormous. Talent gives players a ceiling, but belief is often what allows them to actually reach it."

This confidence has grown even as Sooryavanshi’s daily work has stayed steady across Indian Premier League off-seasons. Bharucha said, “What is interesting is that his practice routines between IPL seasons have not dramatically changed. He has been hitting roughly the same volume of balls for the last couple of years. With elite sport, people often search for some secret technical breakthrough, but more often than not the biggest shift is belief.”

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi batting technique and vision

To explain what separates Sooryavanshi from other talented batters, Bharucha highlighted his delay in committing to shots. “That ability to delay commitment, to almost suspend time for a fraction longer, is one of the defining traits of elite batting,” Bharucha replied, adding that the teenager seems to handle pace and movement with a calm usually seen in far older players.

Sooryavanshi’s batting often appears based on minimal footwork, yet involves complex coordination. He usually stands tall with a high back-lift and explosive bat speed, while a small backfoot trigger lets him use the full depth of the crease. Bharucha said this combination helps Sooryavanshi access extra scoring areas and handle different lengths without large movements towards the ball.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi trials and back-lift evolution

The transformation from junior hopeful to IPL performer began long before his current form. When Sooryavanshi first attended Rajasthan Royals trials, he lacked the prominent back-lift and extreme bat speed seen now. However, Bharucha noticed a sharp cricket brain and rare clarity even then, traits that reminded the coach of Tendulkar at around 15 years of age.

Bharucha, who worked with Royals at that time and is regarded as a leading batting mentor, detailed how Sooryavanshi’s technique changed with better bowling around him. “One of Vaibhav's rare qualities is his ability to grow alongside the game. What people see today is not what existed when he was eight years old. This exaggerated backlift, for example, evolved progressively as the quality and pace of bowling improved around him,” Bharucha told PTI.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi bat speed work before IPL

During those early trials, Sooryavanshi’s bat speed actually lagged behind some peers. Bharucha recalled targeted work undertaken ahead of the 2025 Indian Premier League. “Interestingly, at the trial he attended, he did not even possess the fastest bat speed amongst the group. This was identified and worked on diligently for a period of three months where we were able to improve it by another thirty percent,” the former Mumbai batter recalled.

According to Bharucha, the exaggerated back-lift is more than a style choice. “A lot of that comes from his loading onto the backfoot and his back-lift. The back-lift is not merely a stylistic feature; it acts almost like a self-propagating depth-perception mechanism. As the ball travels, the body, hands, and eyes work together to create spatial awareness,” he said, describing the technical base behind the change.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi training methods and scoring options

Bharucha stressed that Sooryavanshi trains under the same demanding routines as senior teammates Riyan Parag and Dhruv Jurel. There is, he said, no secret drill. “Jurel. There is no radically different magic formula. The process is built around deconstruction and reconstruction -- breaking the batting down into smaller components, identifying inefficiencies, and then rebuilding movements and decisions in a more repeatable way. The core objective is always risk reduction through fault reduction, while simultaneously enhancing scoring options.”

The impact of those methods is visible in Sooryavanshi’s scoring areas from 2025 to 2026. Earlier charts were dominated by on-side strokes, while this year he has developed more off-side options. Bharucha said, “At the highest level, batting development is as much about adding range as it is about removing weaknesses and increasing clarity under pressure,” pointing to a broader, more balanced playbook.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi cricket intelligence and red-ball talk

As performances improve, questions have surfaced about Sooryavanshi’s readiness for red ball cricket. Some observers remain unsure how his current method will translate to longer formats. Bharucha, however, feels that if selectors judge he is capable, then early exposure against stronger attacks could sharpen his development rather than hold it back.

On this, Bharucha said, “So if the belief is that he has the capability, then there is also an argument that throwing him into the deep end may actually accelerate his learning. Great players often adapt quicker against the highest standard because their learning curve sharpens under pressure.” That view aligns with his faith in Sooryavanshi’s game reading skills and temperament.

Even with praise coming from many directions, Bharucha warned that Sooryavanshi will face dips like any cricketer in India. “It would be unrealistic to suggest that he will somehow be immune to the struggles every cricketer experiences. Failure, scrutiny, and the weight of expectation are unavoidable parts of any sporting career, particularly in India but what stands out, though, are some of the qualities he possesses beyond pure skill.

"His leadership instincts and his cricket intelligence are unusually advanced for someone so young. He processes situations quickly and has a natural awareness of the game around him.” For Bharucha, these attributes, combined with a growing belief and evolving technique, explain why bowlers are finding Sooryavanshi harder to contain each season.
