IPL 2023: 'India flop' Varun Chakravarthy terrific spell vs RCB leaves fans in split on Twitter

By Aditya K Halder

Varun Chakravarthy's IPL 2023 season took off on Thursday during Kolkata Knight Riders vs Royal Challengers Bangalore (KKR vs RCB) match as the much-discussed mystery spinner slit open the RCB batting order with three top wickets up the order.

Varun Chakravarthy's three wickets were a major turning point in the game as the KKR spinner bowled Faf du Plessis (23), Glenn Maxwell (5), and Harshal Patel (0) in space of 10 balls rattled RCB.

The spade of wickets came at the right time as RCB threatened to chase down 207 with Virat Kohli (21) and Du Plessis providing a bright start in the powerplay. RCB never recovered from the carnage as they were eventually all out for 123.

The performance was breath of fresh air for Chakravarthy, whose career went downhill since the spinner was deemed as the weakest link in India's T20 World Cup 2020 debacle that prematurely ended with losses to Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

The mystery spinner was seen as India's biggest weapon at the World Cup after consistent performances in IPL but since the World Cup debacle, he never returned to the team. His Thursday performance sparked the old debate as some said he was shown the exit door without enough chances while some said he is just a flat-track bully.
