Veteran cricketer Umesh Kumar passes away

Chandigarh, Sep 21 (UNI) Former Punjab Ranji Team captain Umesh Kumar died of a heart attack at Patiala this evening.

Umesh Kumar was a member of Punjab State Senior Selection Committee and also he was working with State Bank of Patiala.

Known as a gentleman cricketer of his era, the former off-spinner Umesh Kumar has represented Punjab in 64 first class matches from 1969-1985.

He scored 820 runs at an average of 17.44 while he captured 193 wickets at an average of 20.47.

After retirement from first class cricket he took on the responsibilities of umpiring and became a BCCI Panel Umpire and later he was also appointed as Match Referee for the various first class matches.

PCA President IS Bindra and other office bearers of the Punjab Cricket Association condoled the death of a great cricketer, who had served the state admirably for a very long time both first as a player and then as an official.

The PCA fraternity has send its heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved family.
