Nagpur, December 7: Karnataka skipper R Vinay Kumar wrecked Mumbai with a six-wicket haul (6-34), including a hat-trick, on the first day of their Ranji Trophy quarterfinals here on Thursday (December 7).

Vinay Kumar consumed the prolific Prithivi Shaw (0.6), Jay Bista (2.1) and Akash Parkar (2.2) spread over two overs to reduce Mumbai to 7 for three.

Mumbai did not exactly recover from those blows but reached 173, courtesy a 75 (132b, 9x4, 3x6) by Dhawal Kulkarni. In reply, Mayank Agarwal, batting on 62 off 83 balls with eight fours and a six, guided Karnataka to 115 for one at close.

Back to Vinay's hat-trick. Only a few domestic bowlers know how to use the red ball better than Vinay. First, he elicited a loose, away from the body shot from Shaw that ended in the hands of Karun Nair at slips.

The length created doubt in the mind of Shaw, who has been a fine form this season. Bista too committed the error of prodding at an away swinger and this time, Karun took a brilliant one-handed reflex catch at slip.

Akash Parka totally missed a delivery that came back that tad bit and Vinay instantly won a leg-before decision against him to complete the hat-trick.

Karnataka batsmen did not show any sort of weakness - mental or technical - on a good pitch when their turn came and quickly took the route to ascendancy.

Mayank and his partner at totem pole position - R Samarth - added 83 runs to give a strong platform and day two could prove of further agony for Mumbai.
