Former India cricketer Vinod Kambli, who has been grappling with serious health issues in recent years, has received a vital lifeline from one of Indian cricket's greatest icons, Sunil Gavaskar.
Battling medical and financial troubles, Kambli has found hope through Gavaskar's philanthropic initiative - the CHAMPS Foundation.

Kambli was hospitalised in December last year following complications from a urinary infection and severe cramps. The 52-year-old was admitted to a Thane hospital, where he spent nearly two weeks before being discharged on January 1. It marked yet another chapter in Kambli's prolonged battle with health issues, including two heart surgeries he underwent in 2013. Back then, his former teammate Sachin Tendulkar had stepped in with financial support.
In December, Kambli attended the inauguration of legendary coach Ramakant Achrekar's memorial at Shivaji Park, where Tendulkar was also present. Despite his evident frailty at the event, Kambli made the effort to pay his respects. Unfortunately, his condition worsened in the following weeks, leading to his hospitalisation.
Gavaskar, who had publicly promised to extend help to Kambli during these tough times, has now fulfilled that commitment. According to a report in the Times of India, Gavaskar's CHAMPS Foundation - which has supported struggling international sportspersons since 1999 - has committed to providing Kambli with a monthly financial assistance of ₹30,000 starting April 1 for the rest of his life. In addition, the foundation will cover Rs 30,000 annually for his medical expenses.
Anil Joshi, Gavaskar's long-time friend and former Nirlon teammate, confirmed that the cricketing legend immediately initiated support for Kambli following their meeting.
"Gavaskar had wanted to help Kambli ever since he learned about his deteriorating health last year. A day after their meeting at Wankhede Stadium, Gavaskar met two of Kambli's doctors - Dr. Shailesh Thakur and another physician - and me. After being fully briefed on his condition, he instructed the CHAMPS Foundation to immediately begin financial and medical assistance," Joshi said to TOI.
Kambli and Gavaskar shared a poignant moment during the 50th-anniversary celebrations of Wankhede Stadium in January, where the former cricketer, despite difficulty walking, touched Gavaskar's feet as a mark of respect.
