Royal Challengers Bangalore duo Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis announced on Saturday (February 18) Smriti Mandhana as the captain of the RCB for the upcoming Women's Premier League.
Smriti Mandhana, the star Indian women's team batter, was bought by the RCB for the inaugural season of the Women's Premier League (WPL). She also became the most expensive player in the auction as the southpaw was bought for a whopping INR 3.4 crore.
The Indian batting star has been an outstanding player in both the limited-overs format, and will now be leading the RCB team in the WPL, which starts on March 4.
Former RCB captain Kohli and the current skipper Faf du Plessis were seen in a video shared by RCB handle on social media, where they revealed Mandhana as the captain of RCB for the inaugural WPL season.
"From one No. 18 to another, from one skipper to another, Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis announce RCB's captain for the Women's Premier League - Smriti Mandhana," the social media post of RCB wrote.
"Now, it's time for another No. 18 to lead a very special RCB team in the Women's Premier League. Yes, we are talking about Smriti Mandhana. Go well Smriti, you will have the support of the best team and the best fans in the world," Kohli said in the video.
Along with Kohli, the South African batter Du Plessis also welcomed Mandhana as the new RCB women's captain and congratulated RCB for building a strong squad in the WPL auction.
"I am very confident that our women's captain has all the attributes to lead RCB. All the very best Smriti Mandhana. See you at the games," Du Plessis said.
Mandhana will have a massive responsibility as she embarks on the new role. RCB, who haven't won an IPL in history, would love to add silverware in their cabinet in the WPL.
Smriti Mandhana also took part in the video and she thanked the RCB management for keeping faith in her and says she will give her '100 percent' for the franchise.
"It's such a great feeling to see Virat and Faf speak so much about leading RCB. I would like to thank RCB management for giving me this amazing opportunity. I am looking forward to receiving all the love and support from you fans who I am told are the best in the world. And I promise you to give my 100 percent to lead RCB to success in WPL," Mandhana said.
