Kohli and Rohit Should Decide Their Cricketing Future, According to Madan Lal

Former cricketer Madan Lal asserts that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma should have the autonomy to decide their cricketing futures, given their impressive performances in ODIs.

Former India cricketer and selector Madan Lal believes Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma should decide their own futures in cricket. Despite retiring from T20Is and Test matches, both players continue to play ODIs and aim for the 2027 World Cup.

Their recent performances against Australia and South Africa have been impressive, with no concerns about their fitness or form.

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma Should Decide Their Future Says Madan Lal

Lal expressed his views during an Asian Legends League event, stating, "It is their decision and not anybody else’s. So it should be whatever they decide." He praised their current form, noting that they appear as energetic as younger players. "The way Virat Kohli is running between the wickets while taking the singles and hitting the balls. It’s nice to see the way they are going," he added.

Selectors and Coaches Under Scrutiny

Madan Lal, who has experience as a selector during Sachin Tendulkar's captaincy, mentioned that selectors and coaches often face criticism when the team underperforms. He stated, "The first person to be criticised is the coach and the selector, I have been both, so they will get the criticism, never mind. As long as your conscience is right, that matters."

He acknowledged that mistakes are part of the game, reflecting on his tenure as a coach when Tendulkar led the team. "But you do make mistakes. I, as a coach, when Sachin was… I have made mistakes and they are part of the game," he said. Tendulkar's captaincy saw mixed results with India losing nine out of 25 Tests and winning four, while in ODIs they lost 43 out of 73 matches but won 23.

Future Prospects for Kohli and Sharma

Kohli and Sharma's continued presence in ODIs highlights their importance to the team. Their ability to perform at a high level remains evident through recent victories. The duo's experience could be crucial for India's success in future tournaments like the 2027 World Cup.

Their decision to retire from certain formats hasn't affected their ODI performance. Both players have shown resilience and adaptability in maintaining their form. As long as they remain fit and motivated, their contributions will be valuable to Indian cricket.

The discussion around Kohli and Sharma's future underscores the broader challenges faced by selectors and coaches in managing player careers. Balancing experience with emerging talent is crucial for sustained team success.
