Virat Kohli has come agonizingly short of making history in the World Cup 2023 match between India and Sri Lanka on Thursday.
Kohli was on course to score the elusive 49th ODI hundred at the Wankhede Stadium but fell short of just 12 runs from the historical moment. Kohli looked destined to score his 2nd ton of this World Cup, but was picked up by Dilshan Madushanka, thus stunning the crowd in Mumbai.

With 48 ODI centuries, Virat Kohli has missed out on his landmark moment of joining Sachin Tendulkar as the players with joint-most ODI centuries. Sachin Tendulkar had 49 ODI centuries in his career. While Kohli was close to getting to his 49th ODI ton, he will have to wait at least three more days till Sunday to get another crack at history.
India face South Africa in Kolkata on Sunday and Kohli will have another chance there, also on his birthday.
On the contrary, it hasn't been a day without any landmark for Virat Kohli, as the Indian batter went on to break Sachin Tendulkar's record as the Indian player with the most 1000+ ODI runs in a calendar year.
Virat Kohli now has scored more than 1000 ODI runs in eight calendar years, while Tendulkar managed it on seven occasions.
