Virat Kohli Clown Row: Indian Legend Slams Australian Media for Gimmicks and Targeting Star Players

By MyKhel Staff

Australian media's scathing criticism of Virat Kohli, labeling him a "clown" and "crybaby" following the much-debated incident with Sam Konstas during the fourth Border-Gavaskar Test, has sparked widespread debate.

The incident occurred after Kohli inadvertently bumped into Konstas while walking to his position at the crease, leading to heated words. While the ICC penalised Kohli with a fine of 20% of his match fee and a demerit point, Australian media took a harsher stance, with 'The West Australian' publishing the headline, 'Clown Kohli', and calling him an "Indian sook".

Virat Kohli Clown Sunil Gavaskar

Legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar responded sharply, defending Virat Kohli and condemning the Australian media's tactics. "They are like the 12th man of the Australian team," said Gavaskar on Star Sports. "They always target the rival player who poses the biggest threat to their team. And let's not forget, putting Virat Kohli on the cover sells newspapers. Despite Kohli not being captain, they featured his photo alongside Pat Cummins -- it's all about sensationalism."

Gavaskar also pointed out the hypocrisy in how Australian media perceives on-field behaviour. "For decades, they have dismissed sledging by their players as 'aggression' or a strategy to win. But when it comes to Kohli or rival players, they suddenly become guardians of the 'spirit of cricket'."

Recounting his own experience with Australian media during the infamous 1981 Melbourne Test, Gavaskar highlighted their long-standing practice of targeting rival players. He recalled walking off the field in protest after being controversially given out LBW against Dennis Lillee, despite a clear inside edge. "They sledged me after that poor decision, which is why I walked off in anger. It was inappropriate of them to come at me like that. Yet, the Australian media demonized me for it."

The criticism of Kohli from some Australian veterans, who demanded harsher sanctions, has been met with skepticism. Gavaskar emphasised that Kohli's punishment aligned with ICC rules. "We may think the punishment is light, but it's the maximum the ICC could impose under its guidelines. This wasn't favoritism."

The incident also reignited discussions about fairness in award systems and how star players like Kohli often become lightning rods for controversies. Gavaskar suggested that this targeting of high-profile players like Kohli stems from an ingrained strategy to undermine threats to Australian dominance on the field.

The controversy further shows the polarized narrative surrounding Kohli in Australia. His fiery persona and exceptional performances have made him both a hero and a convenient scapegoat in cricketing circles Down Under.

As Kohli continues his final tour of Australia, this episode serves as a reminder of the enduring intensity of the India-Australia cricket rivalry. Whether through brilliance on the field or media narratives off it, Virat Kohli remains a central figure who commands attention, admiration, and, occasionally, unwarranted criticism.
