Virat Kohli Declines Delhi Captaincy on His Return to Ranji Trophy After 13 Years

Virat Kohli is set to make a long-awaited return to the Ranji Trophy after nearly 13 years, with his last appearance dating back to 2012. The former Indian captain will feature for Delhi in their final group-stage match against Railways, starting January 30 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.

However, despite his stature, Kohli has turned down the offer to lead the side, citing unfamiliarity with the team dynamics. According to CricBlogger, Kohli followed the footsteps of Rishabh Pant, who also declined the captaincy for similar reasons earlier in the tournament.

Regular skipper Ayush Badoni will continue leading Delhi, which features two Test players in the squad. Kohli's participation in the Ranji Trophy aligns with the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) push for top players to be actively involved in domestic cricket.

However, reports suggest that no official directive was issued mandating his participation. Sources told CricBlogger that "none of the top Indian cricketers got any SOP from BCCI," dismissing media reports of such instructions. Kohli missed Delhi's previous fixture against Saurashtra due to a reported neck sprain but has since resumed training.

He was spotted practicing in Mumbai with former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar, with a focus on refining his backfoot play-a weakness that has troubled him in recent international outings. A major reason for his return to domestic cricket is to address his struggles outside the off-stump, which plagued him throughout the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

DDCA's Special Arrangements for Kohli's Comeback

The Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) is leaving no stone unturned for Kohli's much-anticipated return. Special arrangements, including increased security and additional seating for over 10,000 spectators, have been planned at the venue.

Notably, the match will be free to attend, with the North End and Old Club House End stands being opened to accommodate fans. Kohli's return to the domestic scene follows a string of Indian Test stars participating in Ranji matches as part of the BCCI's focus on domestic preparedness.

Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Shubman Gill have already featured for their respective state teams, with Gill standing out among the top-order batters. With Kohli's presence expected to draw large crowds, his performance in the Ranji Trophy will be closely monitored as he looks to regain his form ahead of crucial international fixtures for India.
