The return of cricket to the Olympics in 2028 is a thrilling development for sports fans worldwide. Olympics director Niccolo Campriani expressed his deep admiration for Virat Kohli in the wake of the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Campriani credited Indian cricket superstar Kohli’s influence as a major factor in cricket’s re-inclusion in the next Summer Games.

Campriani emphasized that Kohli’s global stature and reach were crucial in boosting cricket’s popularity, especially in the United States. King Kohli's significant impact as a sports icon played a pivotal role in bringing cricket back into the Olympic spotlight.
Cricket's Olympic history dates back to 1900 when it was featured in the Paris Games. In that particular event, only one match was played between Great Britain and France, with Great Britain coming out on top in the lone encounter. Since then, cricket has been absent from the Olympics. In a significant development, the T20 format is set to make a comeback in Los Angeles in 2028.
Campriani expressed his excitement about cricket’s return, describing it as the world’s second most popular sport with an estimated 2.5 billion fans. He noted that including cricket in the Olympics is part of a broader strategy to promote the sport in the U.S. The decision to feature T20 cricket aims to engage the American audience and enhance the sporting culture in the country.
Moreover, Campriani highlighted Kohli’s remarkable social media presence, with 314 million followers, making him the third most-followed athlete globally. Kohli’s social media following surpasses that of basketball legend LeBron James, American football great Tom Brady and golf icon Tiger Woods combined.
The 2024 Paris Summer Olympics concluded with the USA leading the medal tally with 126 medals (40 Gold, 44 Silver, 42 Bronze), followed by China with 91 medals (40 Gold, 27 Silver, 24 Bronze).
Japan secured third place with 45 medals (20 Gold, 12 Silver, 13 Bronze) and Australia rounded out the top four with 53 medals (18 Gold, 19 Silver, 16 Bronze).
The Paris Games featured 32 sports, including the debut of Breaking and Kayak Cross, and the return of Surfing, Skateboarding, Sport Climbing and 3x3 Basketball. For the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, five new sports - Cricket, Baseball/Softball, Flag Football, Lacrosse and Squash are proposed to join the programme.
