Virat Kohli Injury Update: June 26 Fitness Test To Decide England ODI Return

Virat Kohli's return to India's ODI setup could be decided within the next week, with the former captain set to undergo a crucial fitness test in the United Kingdom on June 26 ahead of the upcoming series against England.

Kohli has been sidelined since suffering a hamstring injury following Royal Challengers Bengaluru's successful IPL 2026 campaign, forcing him to miss India's ongoing ODI series against Afghanistan. While the 37-year-old is understood to be progressing well in his recovery, selectors are expected to make a final decision only after assessing the results of the fitness examination.

The development comes at an important stage in India's preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup, with team management continuing to evaluate combinations under captain Shubman Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir.

Virat Kohli Closing In On Return

Kohli's absence has opened the door for several players to strengthen their claims in the ODI side. Ishan Kishan has capitalised on the opportunity with a century against Afghanistan, while Gill has continued his impressive run of form at the top of the order.

However, Kohli remains a central figure in India's 50-over plans despite increasing discussion around the team's long-term transition strategy.

The former captain played a key role in RCB's back-to-back IPL title triumph earlier this year before the hamstring issue interrupted his schedule.

If cleared, Kohli is expected to slot straight back into India's middle order for the England series.

Hardik Pandya Unlikely To Travel

While Kohli's return appears increasingly likely, all-rounder Hardik Pandya is expected to miss the England tour.

Pandya had initially been considered for the Afghanistan ODI series subject to fitness clearance but is now unlikely to feature in the squad for the England assignment.

His absence would leave India without one of their most experienced white-ball all-rounders as the team continues to manage workloads ahead of a packed international calendar.

BCCI Keeps 2027 World Cup Discussions Private

The update on Kohli's fitness arrives amid ongoing debate over the futures of India's senior stars ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa.

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia recently confirmed that discussions regarding India's long-term roadmap are taking place regularly between selectors, coaches and team management, but stressed that such conversations remain confidential.

Both Kohli and Rohit Sharma have repeatedly expressed their desire to feature in the next World Cup, though selectors have remained cautious about making long-term commitments.

With the England series approaching, Kohli's fitness assessment on June 26 could provide the clearest indication yet of where he stands in India's plans for the immediate future.

For now, all eyes remain on the fitness test that could determine whether one of India's greatest ODI batters is ready to return.
