'Virat Kohli Is A Product of Test Cricket': Madan Lal Explains Reason Behind King Kohli's Longevity | MyKhel Special

Limited exposure to long innings, technical limitations, fitness and concentration are some of the nuances of Test cricket. That's why a good Test cricketer can adapt to T20 cricket so easily: he has good technique, understanding of shot selection, and timing.

Hence, former Indian cricketer Madan Lal believes Virat Kohli is a product of Test cricket and any other format. That's why BCCI is hell-bent on making even his seniors play days' cricket for longevity.

Virat Kohli Is A Product of Test Cricket Madan Lal Explains Reason Behind King Kohli s Longevity MyKhel Special

If T20 cricket is all about flair, Test cricket is all about foundation. "I strongly believe that Test cricket is all about your perseverance. Kohli is a product of Test cricket. Any good player will always place Test cricket or days' cricket ahead of any format," Madan Lal told MyKhel in an informal chat.

There have been players like Kohli - along with AB de Villiers, Ben Stokes, and David Warner - who have excelled in both Tests and T20s, showcasing adaptability. Yes, there have been players too who have struggled across formats like Chris Gayle, who excelled in T20s but was inconsistent in Tests, whereas Cheteshwar Pujara thrives in Tests but has limited impact in the shortest format.

"A player with a strong base in Tests can adapt to T20s, but the reverse isn't always true," Madan Lal pointed out.

Test cricket is often considered the pinnacle of the sport, and the respect associated with being a "Test cricketer" is unparalleled. While T20 has brought tremendous commercial success and entertainment value, it's widely seen as a format where skill can sometimes be overshadowed by aggression and short-term impact.

That's why players who excel in Tests are often remembered as legends, and the title of "Test cricketer" carries immense prestige. Addressing someone as a Test cricketer not only signifies their technical expertise but also highlights their ability to uphold the traditional essence of cricket.

For example, names like Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, and Anil Kumble are remembered as much for their grit and class in Tests as for their contributions to the team. It's no wonder players often regard earning a Test cap as the proudest moment of their careers - it's a mark of ultimate validation in cricket.
