Virat Kohli Leads Emotional RCB Farewell As Long-Time Physio Evan Speechly Bids Goodbye After 18 Years

It wasn't just a farewell - it was a full-circle moment for one of the quiet constants behind Royal Challengers Bengaluru. After 18 years with the franchise, former head physio Evan Speechly was honoured in Bengaluru, bringing together players and staff to mark the end of a long-standing chapter.

From 2008 to 2025, Speechly remained a behind-the-scenes pillar through changing squads, seasons, and leadership cycles. His return for the tribute carried the weight of that continuity - less about a goodbye, more about recognising a presence that had become part of the team's identity.

Virat Kohli reflects on a bond built over time

Leading the tribute, Virat Kohli spoke about a relationship shaped over years inside the RCB setup.

"I've probably spent the most amount of time with you in the RCB setup. You're one of the OGs. Apart from your hard work and professionalism, the thing that will always stand out is your kindness, care, and integrity. That's something I'll always carry with me. To say that you'll always be a part of this family, you always have been, and you always will be. We'll remember you fondly forever."

His words captured more than just appreciation for a role - they pointed to the human side of team environments, where trust and care often matter as much as performance.

RCB acknowledge a long-serving presence

Director of Cricket Mo Bobat emphasised the importance of bringing Speechly back to mark the occasion.

"Evan has been our lead physio for a huge amount of time. We wanted to bring him back to recognise his contribution, spend some time with him, and celebrate everything he's done for RCB."

The gesture underlined how franchises are shaped not only by players on the field, but also by those who work quietly behind it.

"It felt like coming home": Speechly's emotional return

For Speechly, the farewell carried a sense of familiarity rather than finality.

"When I walked into the hotel yesterday, it felt like coming home. So many of us have been here a long time, and RCB has always felt like family. Everyone in world cricket would love to spend even one season here, I've been fortunate to have had 18. I'll always feel a part of RCB."

His words reflected the kind of connection that builds over time - one that extends beyond contracts and roles.

The bigger picture: legacy beyond the spotlight

Speechly's 18-year stint spanned multiple generations of players, making him one of the most enduring figures in the franchise's history. While much of cricket's attention stays on performances and results, moments like these shift the focus to continuity, culture, and the people who shape it quietly.

As RCB move forward, the farewell served as a reminder that legacies within teams aren't always defined by runs or wickets - but by the relationships that last long after the final game.
