Indian cricket fans woke up to a moment of shock and sadness as Virat Kohli, one of the modern greats, officially announced his retirement from Test cricket.
The news comes barely a week after current Test captain Rohit Sharma also stepped away from the red-ball format, signalling a generational shift in Indian cricket just ahead of their five-match Test series in England.

The 36-year-old Indian legend, shared a heartfelt message with his fans through his Instagram account, "It's been 14 years since I first wore the baggy blue in Test cricket. Honestly, I never imagined the journey this format would take me on. It's tested me, shaped me, and taught me lessons I'll carry for life."
Among the many tributes that poured in, one particularly emotional note came from former India coach Ravi Shastri. On his X account, Shastri wrote, "Can’t believe you are done. You are a modern-day GIANT and were a fantastic ambassador for Test match cricket in every way you played and captained... Go well, champ. God bless.”
Shastri's words hold deeper significance, given the formidable partnership the two shared from 2017 to 2021, a phase often described as a golden era in Indian Test cricket.
Virat Kohli was the captain of the Indian Cricket team during Ravi Shastri’s tenure as coach. Under Shastri’s guidance, Kohli led a revolution in Indian cricket. The pair achieved historic milestones, including India’s first-ever Test series win in Australia in 2018-19, followed by a successive victory in Border-Gavaskar trophy in 2020-21 in Australia, even in Kohli’s absence for part of the tour.
Their combined leadership also propelled India to the final of the inaugural ICC World Test Championship in 2021. India also held the No.1 spot in the ICC Test rankings for a staggering 42 consecutive months between 2016 and 2020. These success stories also continued in other formats of cricket also.
Beyond tactical successes, Shastri played a pivotal role in Kohli's personal development as a cricketer. After a challenging tour of England in 2014, where Kohli struggled with form, Shastri's mentorship was instrumental in his resurgence. He advised Kohli to adjust his batting technique, such as standing outside the crease to counter swing bowling, which proved effective during the 2018 England tour Shastri's emphasis on mental fortitude and adaptability helped Kohli navigate periods of poor form, notably between 2020 and 2022, encouraging him to return to basics and rebuild his game.
As India prepares for a new chapter, the departure of Virat Kohli from Test cricket marks the end of a resplendent era. With legends like Kohli and Rohit stepping aside, the baton now passes to the next generation stars like Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaisawal or Sai Sudarshan.
