Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma Express Grief Over Ahmedabad Plane Crash That Claimed 241 Lives

Ahmedabad Plane Crash: India was left in mourning on Thursday, June 12, after a devastating plane crash in Ahmedabad resulted in the deaths of 241 people on board. The Air India flight, en route to London, crashed moments after takeoff, hitting the civil hospital and BJ Medical College compound near the airport.

Tragically, the crash claimed the lives of 229 passengers and 12 crew members, with one British national miraculously surviving. The sole survivor, reportedly of Indian origin, is currently receiving medical treatment.

The 12-year-old Boeing 787-8 aircraft took off from Ahmedabad airport at 1:38 pm before the fatal incident occurred. Among the victims were 169 Indian nationals, 52 from the UK, seven Portuguese citizens, and one Canadian. The crash also claimed the lives of four MBBS students and the wife of a doctor associated with BJ Medical College.

Cricketers and public figures across the country have since expressed their shock and sorrow over the disaster. Former India Test players and white-ball stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were among the first to react on social media.

"Really sad and disturbing news from Ahmedabad. Prayers for all the lives lost and their families'', wrote Rohit Sharma on his Insta story, currently India's ODI captain.

Virat Kohli echoed similar sentiments on his tory: "Shocked to hear about the plane crash at Ahmedabad today. Prayers for all those affected and thoughts with their families''.

Both Kohli and Rohit, who stepped away from Test cricket earlier this year, were recently seen in action during the 2025 IPL season. Meanwhile, the Indian men's Test squad, currently in England under the leadership of new skipper Shubman Gill, has also expressed condolences. Several team members have taken to social media to extend their sympathies.

Air India, in an official release, stated that it is prioritizing the needs of the victims' families and providing full cooperation with investigative agencies. A dedicated support team has already been deployed to Ahmedabad to assist those impacted by the tragedy.
