Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma Should Play 2027 ODI World Cup, Says Pakistan Great Zaheer Abbas

Karachi, July 28: Former Pakistan captain and batting legend Zaheer Abbas believes Indian stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma still have enough left in the tank to play the 2027 ICC ODI World Cup, insisting that age should not become a barrier as long as they continue performing and maintain their fitness.

Speaking on a Pakistani television channel, the man famously nicknamed the 'Asian Bradman' backed India's two senior-most batters to remain integral to the team's World Cup plans, citing their vast experience and enduring class.

'Age Should Not Be a Factor'

Zaheer dismissed concerns over the advancing age of the two Indian stars, saying their performances and fitness should remain the only criteria for selection.

"Both are very, very good in terms of skill and, given their experience, I don't see any reason why they should not play the World Cup. Age should not be a factor as long as they are fit and continue scoring runs," Zaheer said.

The former Pakistan great added that scoring runs becomes second nature for players of Kohli and Rohit's calibre after spending years at the highest level.

Rohit's Timing Still a Delight to Watch

While praising Kohli's exceptional fitness, Zaheer felt Rohit could benefit from paying slightly more attention to his physical conditioning but stressed that the Indian captain remains a world-class batter.

"Kohli is still supremely fit, while Rohit just needs to pay a little more attention to his fitness," he said.

Zaheer recalled Rohit's recent century against England, saying the opener continues to make batting look effortless.

"I watched Rohit score a hundred against England, and it is still a pleasure to watch him bat. He plays so effortlessly and with such sweet timing."

Experience Will Be Crucial for India

The former batting great believes India would gain enormously from retaining Kohli and Rohit for the 2027 ODI World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.

With both players among the most experienced cricketers in world cricket, Zaheer said their presence could prove invaluable in another global tournament.

T20 Cricket Has Changed Batting, But Basics Remain

Sharing his views on the evolution of modern batting, Zaheer acknowledged that T20 cricket has introduced several innovative stroke-making options.

However, he maintained that mastering classical shots such as the cover drive and cut shot remains essential for batters aspiring to succeed across all formats.

Hope for Pakistan Under Babar Azam

Zaheer also expressed optimism about Pakistan cricket following Babar Azam's return as Test captain. He urged fans to continue supporting the national team and backed Babar to rediscover his best form.

"Hopefully, the return of Babar Azam as Test captain will turn things around. He is a world-class player and, once he starts scoring runs consistently again, it will have a positive impact on the rest of the team as well. Good times will return for Pakistan cricket," Zaheer said.
