The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is entering a critical phase regarding the future of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma within the Indian ODI team.
Both cricketers, enormously successful over the past decade, have recently retired from Test and T20I formats. This has prompted the BCCI to reconsider how best to utilize their experience as Indian cricket prepares for a generational shift, especially with an eye on the 2027 ODI World Cup.

India will be playing a decent number of ODI matches before the World Cup in two years' time, but BCCI wants to use the time to nurture young talents.
The upcoming conversations between the BCCI and these senior players are considered sensitive yet essential. Both Kohli and Rohit have been pillars of Indian cricket, but by the time of the 2027 World Cup, each will be approaching 40. The board recognizes their leadership and batting prowess but must balance this with the need to invest in emerging talents who can form the team's core for the next several years.
"Yes, it will be discussed soon. We still have more than two years for the next World Cup (November 2027). Both Kohli and Rohit will be pushing 40 by then, so, there has to be a clear plan ahead for the big event as our last win was in 2011. We also need to try out a few youngsters in time," a BCCI source said to PTI recently.
"Look, both Kohli and Rohit have made huge contributions to white ball cricket for the team and the sport in general. They have achieved almost everything. So, I don't think nobody's going to force their hand, but there will be some honest and professional conversations before the next ODI cycle starts to see where they stand mentally and physically. It depends on that," he added.
There is no doubt that BCCI will be planning for the future, but stalwarts such as Rohit and Virat will be depart on their own terms. Rohit Sharma is expected to continue playing for India till the 2027 World Cup, while Kohli's future is tipped to have its finish line in that mega event as well. BCCI may seek for clarity from the veterans about their plans, and if it aligns with the board's vision, we are set to witness the two modern legends bow out amid glaring reception.
