Virat Kohli Test Retirement Sparks Controversy After Coach’s Revelation - Was there any Foul Play?

By MyKhel Staff

In a development that left Indian cricket fans stunned on Monday (May 12) Virat Kohli announced his retirement from Test cricket.

While many initially believed it was a personal decision driven by introspection, a recent statement by the Delhi Ranji Trophy coach has cast serious doubt on that assumption, suggesting there may have been external forces that accelerated Kohli's exit from the longest format.

Delhi Coach Sarandeep Singh makes Shocking Claim

Delhi's Ranji coach Sarandeep Singh disclosed that Kohli had shared detailed plans for the upcoming England series just weeks before stepping away from Test cricket.

"He spoke about playing two India A matches in England. I want to score 3-4 centuries in the England series, like I did in 2018. He told me that I will play two matches for India A and then prepare for the Tests against England," Sarandeep Singh said.

This throws into question the timing and rationale behind the decision, especially since it strongly suggests that Kohli was not only mentally invested in the tour but was also strategically preparing for it.

"He was already settled about his plans. But suddenly, the news of him retiring from Tests is surprising. Because there is no issue of fitness or form," he added.

Supporting this theory is Kohli's unexpected appearance in the Ranji Trophy for Delhi against Railways earlier this year, shortly after the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. For a player of his stature, participating in domestic red-ball cricket is uncommon - unless there's a targeted purpose. It now seems that match might have been part of a larger plan to gear up for English conditions, particularly given his intense focus on red-ball technique and mental readiness.

Why did Virat Kohli retire?

These revelations are at odds with the notion that Kohli had long been contemplating retirement. Instead, they hint at a more abrupt turn of events, possibly influenced by elements beyond the player's control - raising uncomfortable questions about the role of team management or administrative pressure in this decision.

Regardless of the backdrop, Kohli's stature in Indian cricket remains unmatched. As the country's most successful Test captain and a generational batter across all formats, his passion, aggression, and relentless pursuit of excellence have left an indelible mark. His approach helped redefine India's attitude in overseas Tests and instilled a fearless mindset in the dressing room.
