Virat Kohli has provided a strong indication of his aspirations for the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup, amid ongoing discussions about the future of India's senior players. The 36-year-old batting maestro played a pivotal role in India's triumph in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, reigniting speculation about his ODI career.
Having retired from T20Is following India's victorious 2024 T20 World Cup campaign, there were questions about whether Kohli would step away from the 50-over format after securing another major ICC title.

With a lot of time left, the long-term plans for experienced players like Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravindra Jadeja remain a key topic of discussion. India has not won the ODI World Cup since 2011, and Kohli is the only active cricketer from that historic squad led by MS Dhoni. Cricket enthusiasts are eager to see if he can create history by becoming the first Indian to lift the trophy twice.
At a recent event, Kohli was asked about the next big step in his career. His response left little doubt about his commitment to the ODI format. "The Next Big Step? I do not know. Maybe try to win the next World Cup," he remarked, drawing loud cheers from the audience.
Since stepping away from T20Is, Kohli will not feature in the 2026 T20 World Cup, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka. However, his next opportunity to compete in an ICC tournament will come in the 2027 ODI World Cup, scheduled to take place in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. Additionally, should India qualify, Kohli could also be a part of the 2027 World Test Championship (WTC) final, which will be played a few months before the global 50-over event.
Regarded as one of the greatest ODI batters of all time, Kohli holds the record for the most centuries in the format with 51 tons. The two-time Champions Trophy winner has also amassed 14,181 runs, making him the third-highest run-getter in ODI cricket history.
As the cricketing world speculates about the longevity of India's senior stars, Kohli's latest remarks suggest that he remains focused on another shot at ODI World Cup glory.
