Virat Kohli to Yash Dhull: Five Players Who Have Led India To ICC U19 World Cup Title Win

India are in their ninth ICC Under-19 World Cup final, and would be eyeing for their record-extending sixth title when they take on Australia U19 on Sunday in Benoni. India are currently unbeaten in the Under-19 World Cup 2024.

The junior team of budding superstars of the game have done exceptionally well in the tournament. Apart from an excellent batting and bowling unit, India have also got a very able captain in Uday Sahara, who led the team from the front in the high-pressure semi-final match against South Africa.

Chasing 245, India were four down for 32 when Uday Sharan stepped up to score 81 runs off 124 balls and take India to a two-wicket win. The right-hand batter from Rajasthan is the leading run-scorer of the tournament. He has scored 389 runs in six matches at an average of 64.83.

India captains have written a story of their own at the Under-19 World Cups. Three of them leading India to the title win have gone on to represent the country at the highest level. Each one of them became a big name in the cricketing fraternity. Let's have a look at the five players who led India to ICC U19 World Cup wins.

Captains who have won U-19 World Cup for India

  • Mohammad Kaif: The former India star won the Under-19 World Cup as captain in 2000. He scored 180 runs in eight matches in the tournament at an average of 34 and a strike rate of 67.19. Kaif played 13 Tests and 125 ODIs for India.
  • Virat Kohli: The star batter won the second title for India in 2008. He scored 235 runs in six matches at an average of 47 and a strike rate of 94.75. He also smashed a hundred as India defeated South Africa to win the title. Virat Kohli went on to become arguably the best batter of the generation. The former captain has played 113 Tests, 292 ODIs, and 117 T20Is.
  • Unmukt Chand: The stylish batter became the third India U19 captain, and the second player from Delhi to lift the trophy in 2012. He scored 246 runs in six matches at an average of 49.20 and a strike rate of 75.00. Considered the next big thing in Indian cricket, Chand could never make his debut for the senior team. The 30-year-old has moved to the USA and is expected to lead their national team soon.
  • Prithvi Shaw: The Mumbai batter led India to title win in ICC U19 World Cup 2018. Prithvi Shaw scored 261 runs in six matches at an average of 65.25, and a strike rate of 94.56. Till date, the 24-year-old has played 5 Tests, six ODIs and one T20I for India. He hit a Ranji Trophy after comeback from injury on Friday, February 9.
  • Yash Dhull: The right-hand batter is the third player from Delhi to win the U-19 World Cup title for India. He scored 229 runs in four matches at an average of 76.33 and a strike rate of 85.44 at the U19 World Cup 2022. Dhull has also led the Delhi Ranji Trophy at a young age.
