Sehwag leaves Delhi to play for 'young and exciting' Haryana

Bengaluru, Aug 22: Opening batsman Virender Sehwag will play for Haryana in this year's domestic season, it was announced today by Haryana Cricket Association's (HCA) secretary Anirudh Chaudhry.

Earlier this year, there were reports that Sehwag would move out of Delhi, his home team. Now, on Saturday (August 22), Chaudhry tweeted that the dashing opener will don Haryana jersey in Ranji Trophy and other tournaments in 2015-16 domestic season.

"I am really looking forward to playing for Haryana this domestic season. It is an exciting setup with a lot of youngsters in the side," Sehwag said.

"It will be nice to share the dressing room with a side that is bubbling with youth. I will be looking to share my experiences with them and hopefully shape some of their careers in the process. I also hope to score well for Haryana this domestic season.

"I would like to thank the DDCA (Delhi and District Cricket Association) for their support to me over the years and would particularly like to thank Mr. Arun Jaitley, who in his erstwhile role as the President of DDCA guided and supported all the players and particularly me," he added.

"Happy to announce that @virendersehwag will represent @haryanacricket in the coming @BCCI domestic cricket season," Chaudhry, who is also the treasurer of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), wrote on his Twitter page accompanied by a picture of him handing over Haryana cap to Sehwag.

Sehwag made his first-class debut for Delhi in 1997-98 season. Since then, he has played 189 first-class games, scoring over 14,000 runs with 41 centuries. He made his Test debut in 2001 and has 8,586 runs with 23 hundreds.

The 36-year-old Sehwag's international career seems to be over and he is concentrating on domestic tournaments. He plays for Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The right-hander, one of the best openers the game has seen, played 104 Tests, 251 ODIs and 19 T20Is for India. His last international match was in March 2013 - a Test against Australia.
