Colombo, Jul 11: Sri Lanka's star spinner, Wanindu Hasaranga, on Thursday (July 11) stepped down from his position as the captain of the national T20I team following the country's early exit from the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024.
Hasaranga, who was appointed as the T20I captain only last year, led the team in 10 matches during his tenure. The Sri Lankan cricketer is the number one-ranked all-rounder in T20Is.

In a statement released by Sri Lankan Cricket (SLC), Hasaranga expressed that stepping down from the captaincy was in the best interest of the team. He emphasized his commitment to contributing as a player and supporting the team's leadership. "Sri Lanka will always have my utmost best efforts as a player, and I will support and stand by my team and leadership as always," Hasaranga wrote in his resignation letter to SLC.
Despite his resignation from the captaincy, SLC confirmed that Hasaranga would remain a vital part of their squads going forward. His skills and experience continue to be invaluable assets for the team.
Sri Lanka is set to face India in a home white-ball bilateral series starting on July 26. The team has yet to announce their squad and the new skipper for the upcoming series. Team India will tour the island nation to play 3 T20Is and as many ODIs. It will also be the first assignment of new head coach Gautam Gambhir.
Hasaranga's leadership saw mixed results, but his dedication to the team remains unwavering. As the Sri Lankan side prepares for the upcoming series against India, fans and teammates alike will be looking forward to seeing Hasaranga continue to shine on the field.
