By MyKhel Staff

After the injury to Rishabh Pant, the Indian team has suffered another injury scare as Washington Sundar endured a problem in the 1st ODI against New Zealand on Sunday (January 11).

India won the match at the Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara against the Kiwis as Virat Kohi dazzled with a brilliant 93. Chasing 301 runs, the hosts got to the score with an over to spare and won the match by 4 wickets, thus taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

But along with that, Washington Sundar's injury is a big blow to the team. The 26-year-old, who bowled five overs for 27 runs, walked off midway through the New Zealand innings and did not return to field. Despite the discomfort, he later came out to bat at No. 8 and played a key role in India's successful run chase for a four-wicket win.

"Washington Sundar has a side strain and will go for a scan after the match," India captain Shubman Gill said at the post-match presentation.

Despite the injury, Washington came out to bat and had an unbeaten partnership with KL Rahul to take the Indian team over the line.

Is Washington Sundar out of ODI series?

The India all-rounder is set to have a scan on Monday, but as per reports, he has been ruled out for the ODI series. Washington is also part of the T20 World Cup squad and the team management is willing to not take any risk regarding the player. There is yet to be an official confirmation regarding this.

Washington is expected to leave the Indian team and recover from the latest setback. The Chennai-born becomes the second player ruled out with injury after Rishabh Pant suffered the same fate before the first match. Pant was hit by a sidearm bowler and had a similar side strain, which has ruled him out of the series. Ahead of the T20 World Cup, Tilak Varma's participation is in doubt as well after he underwent immediate surgery for testicular torsion.
