WATCH: Tilak Varma Celebrates Too Early, Pays the Price With Bizarre Run-Out

Tilak Varma fell victim to a bizarre run-out after a momentary lapse in concentration during India's third T20I against West Indies at the Holkar Stadium in Indore on Sunday. The left-hander was dismissed for 28 off 16 balls after mistakenly believing a shot from Axar Patel had reached the boundary, allowing the visitors to capitalise on a costly loss of awareness in the middle.

The incident unfolded during the 17th over, bowled by Gudakesh Motie, when Axar flicked a low full toss towards deep backward square leg. West Indies fielder Kamil Pooran sprinted across and dived to stop the ball from reaching the boundary, keeping it in play.

However, both Indian batters appeared to believe the ball had crossed the rope. After completing a single, Axar and Tilak began exchanging glove punches in the middle of the pitch, seemingly under the impression that they had been awarded a boundary.

How Tilak Varma was run out against West Indies

While Axar managed to make his ground at the non-striker's end, Tilak remained outside his crease, unaware that the ball was still live. The West Indies fielders reacted quickly, with the ball relayed to Motie at the bowler's end.

Motie broke the stumps before Tilak could return to safety, prompting the on-field umpires to refer the decision to the third umpire. The replay confirmed that Pooran had successfully prevented a boundary, and Tilak was ruled run out.

Tilak departed for 28 off 16 deliveries, having struck four boundaries. What should have been a routine passage of play instead became one of the more unusual dismissals of India's innings, with the batter's assumption proving costly.

India's middle-order collapse after explosive start

The run-out came during a dramatic collapse after India had made a blistering start. Abhishek Sharma smashed 69 off 30 balls, reaching his half-century in just 18 deliveries, while Ishan Kishan contributed 37 off 18 balls as India raced to 87/1 in the Powerplay.

Roston Chase dismissed Kishan through a stumping before removing captain Shreyas Iyer for one. Abhishek soon followed, mistiming a pull off Shamar Springer, as India lost three wickets for nine runs in 10 balls.

Naman Dhir and Nitish Kumar Reddy attempted to rebuild the innings, but West Indies continued to strike at regular intervals. Tilak's dismissal added to India's problems, and Axar Patel later suffered another run-out after a mix-up while attempting a second run.

India eventually finished on 223 all out, with Prince Yadav striking three boundaries in the final over to provide a late boost.

India hold on for 14-run victory

Despite losing momentum with the bat, India defended their total to beat West Indies by 14 runs and take a 2-1 lead in the five-match series.

Arshdeep Singh delivered the decisive blows in the 18th over, dismissing Keemo Paul and Sherfane Rutherford in quick succession. Shamar Springer threatened a late comeback with 35 off 11 balls, but West Indies fell short.

Tilak's run-out stood out as a costly moment in an innings defined by India's spectacular start and subsequent collapse. The incident highlighted how a brief lapse in concentration, even during a high-scoring T20 contest, can quickly change the course of a team's innings.
