India and Pakistan, two historic cricketing rivals, are scheduled to meet in the semifinals of the World Championship of Legends (WCL) 2025, but political tensions have cast a shadow over this highly anticipated encounter.
In the group stages, India pulled out of the match against Pakistan as several players, including Shikhar Dhawan, Yusuf Pathan, Yuvraj Singh protested against playing their neighbours.

But since then, the tides have changed. India's campaign hung by a thread until a do-or-die final group match against the West Indies. India needed not only a win, but a big one: they had to chase 145 within 14 overs to outdo England on Net Run Rate. Displaying vintage aggression, Stuart Binny led the charge with an unbeaten 50 off 21 balls, while Yusuf Pathan smashed a quickfire 21* off 7 balls. India clinched a five-wicket win in just 13.2 overs, dramatically sneaking into the semifinals.
Pakistan, meanwhile, faced fewer on-field hurdles, progressing through the league comfortably and earning extra points when their scheduled group stage clash with India was cancelled. The Pakistanis have registered victories in the group stages and have progressed as the top-placed team.
With both teams qualifying, the tournament schedule suggested a blockbuster semifinal on July 31 at Edgbaston, Birmingham. India are slated to play against Pakistan, as the 4th placed team against the 1st placed team.
Tournament organizers have publicly stated that every effort will be made to avoid another India vs Pakistan match, even in the knockout phases, due to continuing tensions and player withdrawals. But as it stands now, another clash between the arch-rivals seems inevitable.
At present, there is no confirmation that the semifinal will actually take place, the situation remains fluid, with organizers leaving the door open for a possible clash only if neither side withdraws or refuses to play. The Indian legends may comply and play especially after the recent Asia Cup scheduling, where the Indian men's team will take on Pakistan in the continental tournament.
Shikhar Dhawan recently said that he will not play Pakistan in the WCL 2025, when asked about if he will play against Pakistan in the knockouts. The sympathy of the other players are yet to be known. But on Wednesday, the WCL sponsor Easemytrip announced that they will not be associated with the semifinal even if India goes on to play against Pakistan. But it is a massive conundrum for the Indian
If this happens, India are likely to be eliminated from the WCL 2025 while Pakistan will advance to the Final. In the other semifinal, South Africa are set to lock horns against Australia.
