‘We Just Didn’t Execute’: Ruturaj Gaikwad Admits Bowling Let CSK Down After PBKS Loss
Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad did not shy away from addressing his team's shortcomings after their five-wicket defeat to Punjab Kings in IPL 2026, admitting that poor execution with the ball ultimately proved decisive.
Despite posting a strong total of 209 for 5, powered by a brilliant knock from young batter Ayush Mhatre, CSK were unable to defend the target as Punjab Kings chased it down comfortably in 18.4 overs, led by a composed half-century from skipper Shreyas Iyer.

Speaking after the match, Gaikwad acknowledged that while the team fielded a balanced bowling attack on paper, execution at key moments let them down.
Chennai entered the contest with a combination of pace and spin options but failed to apply sustained pressure on PBKS batters during crucial phases.
"We felt we had three seamers going in, and obviously we have two good wrist spinners bowling in tandem, especially in the middle after the powerplay. We felt that, you know, it will help," Gaikwad said after the match.
However, he admitted that the team's spinners - expected to control the middle overs - endured an off day.
"But I think, you know, slight off day for both of them. So, I think, that is what cost us. Sometimes we executed really well. Sometimes we just didn't execute at the right time."
Gaikwad highlighted the lack of momentum in the middle overs as a turning point in the contest.
"There was a point when it (required run-rate) went to 11, and a couple of good overs would have taken it to 12-13. We just did not get momentum in the middle (with the ball)."
"Tough one (to take)."
Ayush Mhatre Emerges as a Bright Spot for CSK
While the defeat exposed concerns in the bowling department, Gaikwad pointed to positives with the bat - particularly the performance of young Ayush Mhatre.
Mhatre's 43-ball 73 played a crucial role in helping Chennai reach a competitive total, showing composure beyond his experience.
Alongside him, Shivam Dube also contributed with the bat, giving Chennai a platform that should have been enough to challenge the opposition.
However, Gaikwad made it clear that improving bowling execution remains the immediate priority if CSK are to recover momentum in IPL 2026.
Shreyas Iyer Credits Strong Start for PBKS Chase
Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer credited the aggressive opening partnership for laying the foundation of the successful chase.
"The way we started today, that was an exceptional start for us. I feel the way they (Arya and Prabhsimran) have been batting has been phenomenal and it stabilises the rhythm for us."
Iyer also emphasised the importance of contributions across the batting order.
"I am glad everyone is getting to bat. It gives immense confidence to the team. Whenever we are in a pressure situation, people are aware on how to handle it."
He added that the team's internal culture has played a key role in their early-season momentum.
"We just decided in the dressing room, we will play a brand of cricket to impress each other -- that gives us a certain sort of clarity, and basically challenging each other."
CSK Face Early Pressure as PBKS Build Momentum
With back-to-back setbacks early in the season, Chennai Super Kings now find themselves searching for answers, particularly in the bowling department.
Punjab Kings, meanwhile, have strengthened their early-season momentum with consecutive wins, supported by strong starts from their top order and consistent finishing ability.
For CSK, the message from their captain was clear - the batting foundation exists, but unless the bowling unit improves execution, defending totals may remain a recurring challenge in IPL 2026.
