“We Missed On Execution…” Ruturaj Gaikwad Admits To Costly Lapses In CSK’s Bowling Display Against Lucknow
Chennai Super Kings skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad admitted that the bowling group did not meet expectations in the seven-wicket loss to Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL on Friday, a result that left the five-time champions facing a must-win scenario in their last two league fixtures, with 12 points from 12 matches and the added pressure of depending on other results to stay in the playoff race.
Lucknow Super Giants, who had already slipped out of playoff contention, hurt CSK’s campaign with a powerful chase built around Mitchell Marsh’s aggressive knock, leaving Gaikwad’s side needing quick improvement before returning to home conditions for the final stretch of the league phase.

IPL 2026 Playoffs Scenario For CSK
Gaikwad stressed that the mood in the camp stayed calm despite the setback, and that the route to the playoffs remained straightforward if CSK controlled what was in their hands, saying, "It is simple (playoff hopes), nothing complicated. Nothing to worry about, just ensure we have a good day and hope that we turn things around."
The captain accepted that the bowling display fell short on the night and outlined the immediate task for the group, explaining, "Bowling had an off-day today," before adding, "The first challenge is getting to Chennai and making sure we improve on the areas we need to improve, and then adapt and assess the conditions (in the remaining to league games)."
'We Missed On Execution' Ruturaj Gaikwad Admits "Missed Opportunities" Against Lucknow
Reflecting on the first innings, Gaikwad felt CSK’s total gave the bowlers something to work with, noting that the surface offered help to the seamers and saying a score near 190 looked competitive, even though the side had initially targeted a range between 160 and 170 before finishing on 180.
Gaikwad broke down the bowling plans against the LSG top order, pointing out that conditions encouraged a hard-length approach and short-pitched deliveries, and said, "There was a bit of something for the fast bowlers. Found it difficult to hit it off a hard length. We were looking at 160-170, and got 180. Nothing much better we could have done from a batting point of view.
"They (LSG) batted well and played some extraordinary shots. We were looking (to bowl the short ball) but (Josh) Inglis played differently in the last game, and Marsh plays the short ball well, so we were trying to hit a hard length.
"We missed on execution but they played extraordinary shots. Sometimes the opposition can play good cricket than you, and you have to accept it," he added.
'It Feels Good...' Pant Reflects On LSG's See-Saw Campaign
On the winning side, LSG skipper Rishabh Pant highlighted the satisfaction of finishing strongly even without a playoff path and praised the team’s attitude, saying, "It feels good (to win). Getting a win definitely feels good. The things we talk about, of having a lot to play for, regardless of how the season ends, we take a lot of pride (in playing like this)."
Pant felt that the squad had performed well overall despite missing the top-four cut, underlining the balance in the bowling attack and adding, "Four fast bowlers, it has been working for us. The team we have, I am going to say it again, is so amazing. The only thing that can harm us is having too many thought processes."
The LSG captain also explained the change in batting order, after choosing not to walk in at the usual No. 4 slot, clarifying that the move aimed to provide game time to less-used squad members and saying, "I was ready to bat (tonight). But the idea came in on why not to try players who have not played much. Still wanted to be out there but sometimes, you have to respect some things," added Pant.
CSK is now headed back to Chennai with limited room for error, needing victories in both remaining league matches and favourable outcomes elsewhere, while LSG looked to close their campaign with similar intent, treating each outing as a chance to test combinations and maintain pride despite the IPL CSK LSG playoffs picture already moving beyond their reach.
