Wessly Madhevere took a hat-trick on Thursday as the off-spinner's spell helped hosts Zimbabwe beat the Netherlands by a run in a dramatic encounter at the second of the World Cup Super League ODI matches in Harare.

The Netherlands were in the hunt for the win at one stage at 213/4 with 272 to chase but Wessly Madhevere took the wickets of Colin Ackermann, Teja Nidamanuru, and Paul van Meekeren in the 44th over to turn the match in Zimbabwe's favour.

However, the match went down to the last over as Ryan Klein was run out of the last ball in an attempt to find the third run to tie the match.

Speaking after the match, Wessly Madhevere, who finished with a spell of 3/36, said the hat-trick was unexpected as he was only trying to reduce the Netherlands' scoring rate. The Zimbabwean showed his all-round abilities too with a knock of 43 earlier in the game while opening the innings.

Experienced all-rounder Sikandar Raza, who also bowled a crucial 49th over, was crucial too on a dry surface as he picked three wickets as well.

For the Netherlands, Max O'Dowd scored 81 during the chase while Tom Cooper was equally impressive with a knock of 74 as the duo added 125 runs for the second wicket during the chase.

Among Zimbabwe batters, Sean Williams scored 77 upon return from a finger injury during the first innings while Dutch leg spinner Shairz Ahmad took a fifer to stop Zimbabwe from putting up a bigger total.
