West Indies ODI squad vs India: Shimron Hetmyer back after 2-year hiatus, Pooran and Holder unavailable

West Indies have announced a 15-member squad for their upcoming 3-match ODI series against India which starts from Thursday, July 27 at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados. Left-hand batter Shimron Hetmyer has been recalled, while former captains Nicholas Pooran and Jason Holder are unavailable.

Hetmyer, who was excluded from the West Indies squad for the T20 World Cup 2022 after he missed the flight to Australia, hasn't played an ODI for the West Indies in two years. His last appearance in a 50-over game came against Australia in July 2021.

Alongside Hetmyer, fast bowler Oshane Thomas has also got a recall. Further, pacer Jayden Seales and leg-spinner Yannic Cariah have been included following their rehabilitation from surgery while left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie is also included, having recovered from injury. Keemo Paul is yet to recover from injury.

“We welcome Oshane and Shimron back into the group. Both have played at the international level before, with some success, and we believe they will fit well into the set-up. Oshane brings pace and is a potential wicket-taker with the new ball. Shimron’s style of batting will offer a lot especially in the middle stage of the innings and he is also a potential 'finisher’," chief selector Desmond Haynes said.

Kensington Oval hosts the first two matches Thursday, July 27 and Saturday, July 29. The teams then move to Trinidad for the third and final ODI at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy on Tuesday, August 1. All the matches will kick start from 7:00 PM IST.

The team was selected following a four-day camp at Kensington Oval held to prepare the white-ball players. India and West Indies lock horns in a 5-match T20I series following the three ODIs.

The West Indies ODI team recently failed to qualify for the ODI World Cup scheduled to be held in India from October 5.
