West Indies, Zimbabwe stranded in India after T20 World Cup Exit amid Middle East Conflict

By MyKhel Staff

The ongoing escalation in the Middle East, marked by US and Israeli military strikes on Iran, has triggered widespread airspace closures across West Asia, leaving the West Indies and Zimbabwe cricket teams stranded in India following their exits from the ICC T20 World Cup 2026.

The West Indies squad, based in Kolkata after a crucial Super Eight defeat to India at the iconic Eden Gardens on March 1, has been unable to depart as planned. Their return journey, typically routed through major Gulf hubs like Dubai, has been disrupted by the suspension of flights in the region.

Cricket West Indies (CWI) issued a statement confirming the delay: "The departure of the West Indies Senior Men's Team from India has been delayed due to international airspace restrictions."

The board added that it is collaborating closely with the ICC, airlines, and government authorities to arrange safe alternative travel for players and staff. Zimbabwe's team, which concluded its campaign earlier and was stationed in Delhi, faces identical challenges.

Zimbabwe Cricket stated that the squad remains safe in India but their scheduled return via Dubai, a common transit point for flights between South Asia and southern Africa, has been rendered impossible.

"Travel plans have been affected by the evolving situation in the Middle East, which has disrupted key transit routes," the board noted in a post on X, assuring that fresh arrangements are underway. The conflict's fallout has grounded thousands of flights, with reports of damage at Dubai International Airport and broader cancellations across Gulf carriers. This has ripple effects on global aviation, stranding not only cricketers but countless travellers worldwide.

For the West Indies, the timing compounds disappointment after a competitive World Cup run that ended in a five-wicket loss to the hosts. Players, including key figures like Jason Holder, who shone in the India match, now wait in Kolkata hotels, turning what should have been a quick exit into an indefinite stay. Zimbabwe, eliminated earlier in the tournament, similarly grapples with logistics from Delhi.

Both boards emphasized player welfare and safety amid the uncertainty. As the Middle East situation remains volatile, cricket authorities continue monitoring developments, exploring longer rerouting options via Europe or other paths. The incident highlights how geopolitical events can unexpectedly intersect with international sport, turning a routine post-tournament departure into a major logistical crisis.
