What are the Lowest Test Targets India have failed to Chase over the Years?

By MyKhel Staff

India are up against England in a five-match Test series. After two matches, the series remains 1-1 and as the ongoing Lord's Test gets its final action on Monday (July 14), India are around 92 runs away from victory.

At about Lunch, the visitors are 101 for 7, having lost three early wickets in the first session. Ravindra Jadeja and Nitish Reddy bat together, which is the last recognizable batting pair for the Indian team. With the series momentum looming on the outcome of this, India will be desperate to get over the line.

What are the Lowest Test Targets India have failed to Chase over the Years

If India fail to chase this down, the result will be a disappointment, but not the worst ever capitulation for India in its Test history. Over the years, India have lost matches while chasing even smaller targets.

The lowest unsuccessful target for India has been 120, when the Indian team lost to West Indies in Bridgetown way back in 1997, under then captain Sachin Tendulkar.

In England, India's lowest unsuccessful chase came in 2018 when the Indian team failed to get 194 at Edgbaston. The Virat Kohli-led team got bundled out for just 162 runs. More recently, India failed to chase 147 in Mumbai against New Zealand last year.

In terms of overall Test cricket, the lowest target not chased was way back in 1882, when England failed to score 85 runs against Australia. In that match, the Englishmen got bundled out for 77 runs and Aussies won the match by 7 runs.

India's most successful low score defense in Test cricket was against Australia in Mumbai, when the team, led by Rahul Dravid, beat the Aussies by 13 runs while defending a target of 107 runs.
