Virat Kohli has decided to bid adieu to Test cricket with immediate effect, as the Indian stalwart announced on Monday (May 12).
With a social media post, Kohli confirmed his departure from the longest format of the game just ahead of the England Test series.

Kohli made his Test debut in 2011 and went on to play 123 matches, amassing 9,230 runs at an average of 46.85, including 30 centuries. His tenure as India's Test captain from 2014 to 2022 was marked by significant achievements, including leading India to the finals of the World Test Championship in 2021 and 2023. Under his leadership, India secured 40 victories in 68 matches, making him the country's most successful Test skipper.
"It's been 14 years since I first wore the baggy blue in Test cricket. Honestly, I never imagined the journey this format would take me on. It's tested me, shaped me, and taught me lessons I'll carry for life," Kohli wrote on Instagram.
The India stalwart wished to retire and communicated it to BCCI recently. Although the apex body tried to convince Kohli to stay, he chose to go on his own terms. As BCCI confirmed the news on Monday, they have also revealed how things panned out.
As per the social media post by BCCI, Kohli called on Monday morning announcing his retirement. The batter reportedly wished the next generation and conveyed it was the right time for him to depart.
"It's time for the young generation to take over. With the new WTC cycle starting, it's the right time for the team to build. If they need any help from me, I am always there," Kohli was quoted as saying by BCCI.
As Kohli takes the final call on his Test career, the colosseum of modern age Indian cricket leaves behind a plethora of memories and numerous moments to cherish. With two glorious knights of Indian team hanging their sword, the 'Gen Bold' have a mountain to climb in the England summer.
