What Happens If PBKS vs MI, IPL 2025 Qualifier 2 Match Gets Washed Out Due To Rain?

PBKS vs MI: Qualifier 2 of IPL 2025 between Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians is underway at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on 1st June, but we are yet to see a ball bowled.

With a place in the final at stake, the pressure is immense on both sides. While the weather appeared largely favourable in the lead-up, a few passing showers have created uncertainty around the full course of the match.

So, what happens if rain returns and washes out the contest completely?

If the match cannot be completed due to persistent rain or unplayable conditions, Punjab Kings will automatically advance to the IPL final, scheduled for Tuesday at the same venue. This is because Punjab Kings finished higher than Mumbai Indians on the points table at the end of the league stage.

The Kings ended the group phase at the top of the standings with 19 points from 14 games, while the five-time champions Mumbai Indians secured the fourth position with 16 points. As per IPL's playing conditions, in the event of a no-result in a playoff match (excluding the final), the team that ranked higher in the league stage progresses to the next round.

This puts Punjab at an advantage should the weather spoil the evening completely. However, with only a light cloud cover reported over Ahmedabad, a total washout seems unlikely at this point but you never know. Still, with weather always unpredictable, fans are keeping their fingers crossed for a result on the field rather than a progression by default.

Punjab Kings had earlier suffered a loss to Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Qualifier 1, while Mumbai Indians earned their place in this knockout clash by defeating Gujarat Titans in the Eliminator.

It's also worth noting that unlike the final, which has a reserve day in case of weather interruptions, Qualifier 2 does not. This means there's only one window to get a result.

Interestingly, this is not the first time weather has played spoilsport at this venue. The 2023 IPL final between Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings also had to be extended to a second day due to rain delays.

As things stand, all eyes are on the skies-and the clock. Earlier, Shreyas Iyer after winning the toss opted to ball first due to overcast conditions.
