What is the Second Ball rule in IPL 2025? How will it Work? Explained

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has always been at the forefront of innovation, introducing changes that enhance the game's competitive edge.

From strategic timeouts to the Impact Player rule, the tournament continues to evolve. Now, for IPL 2025, a new element is set to influence the game, the 'Second Ball.'

What is the Second Ball rule in IPL 2025 IPL New Rule on Dew Ball Explained

What is the 'Second Ball' in IPL 2025?

The 'Second Ball' is an initiative designed to address one of the biggest challenges faced in T20 cricket. The IPL governing council has decided to introduce the 2nd ball rule to which will be applicable in the second innings of the evening matches.

Why is the Second Ball is Introduced?

IPL has introduced a new protocol where the umpire will assess the condition of the ball after the 11th over in the second innings. If the dew is found to be affecting play significantly, a fresh ball will be introduced.

This has been introduced to counter the excessive dew factor in night matches. Dew makes it difficult for bowlers to grip the ball, giving a significant advantage to batters, particularly in run chases.

This is expected to maintain fairness, ensuring that bowlers do not suffer due to external conditions beyond their control. Generally, the evening matches in IPL can be affected by the Dew Factor.

How Will It Work?

  • The '2nd Ball' rule will only be considered in the second innings of a match, preferably after the 11th over.
  • The on-field umpires will have the final say on whether the ball needs to be changed.
  • The decision will be made based on visible and tangible signs of excessive dew at the stadium.
  • If approved, the existing ball will be replaced with a new, identical ball that has been kept in dry conditions.

No Second Ball in Afternoon Matches

The afternoon matches in IPL 2025 will not feature this rule, as dew is not a concern in daytime games.
