What lies ahead of Team India after a home Test series loss to New Zealand?

By Indranil Basu

India's series loss to New Zealand at home does draw parallels to that pivotal 2012 England series, which indeed signalled the start of transitions for iconic players like Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid.

With Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli now facing similar scrutiny, the series could be a significant moment for both of them. Rohit's struggle to even get a start and Kohli's visible challenges, despite a 70-run knock, are raising questions about their adaptability and roles in the current lineup.

Team India

Gautam Gambhir's appointment as coach is insightful, especially given his previous differences with Kohli. This dynamic could indeed influence team harmony, particularly with the pressures that come with managing a national side, which demands a different level of handling compared to the IPL. Perhaps a different coach choice might have avoided potential tensions, especially with senior players still in the squad. Gambhir now faces the challenge of balancing his vision with the need for cohesion in a team with established legends.

The loss to New Zealand on home soil indeed marks a significant moment for Indian cricket, especially given India's historically strong record at home. Unlike the high-stakes first World Test Championship (WTC) final on neutral ground against New Zealand which India lost, this series should have been more within India's control. The team struggled to come together as a cohesive unit, failing to translate individual performances into a winning outcome.

The lack of consistent runs from senior players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli was a glaring issue, making it difficult for the team to put up a competitive total. Without their usual contributions, India's batting felt vulnerable, exposing the team's dependence on these seasoned players. This loss feels like a wake-up call - if the seniors can't rediscover their form, it could be time to evaluate the team's approach and consider fresh strategies.

India's defeat to New Zealand at home does indeed bolster Australia's confidence ahead of the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy. After India's back-to-back series wins over Australia, this New Zealand series was expected to set the tone. But the way India faltered has exposed some vulnerabilities, making the challenge against Australia even more daunting.

While Jasprit Bumrah's presence is crucial, he alone cannot shoulder the bowling burden, especially on Indian pitches where control and consistency are key. Mohammad Shami's experience would add depth to the attack, providing the kind of sustained pressure that's essential in long-format games.

Additionally, someone with Cheteshwar Pujara's resilience could be invaluable but he isn't a part of the squad anymore. A seasoned player who can stabilize the innings will be essential to balance the contributions from younger players, who may still lack the experience to endure Australia's competitive intensity.

India will need to regroup quickly, with both experienced heads and the hunger from the younger players working in tandem, if they hope to defend their home turf against Australia.

With India under Gautam Gambhir's guidance rather than Rahul Dravid's steady hand, the recent loss adds an extra layer of scrutiny. Dravid's presence brought consistency and a calm approach that many felt was essential, especially with a mix of senior players and rising talents. Gambhir, known for his no-nonsense style and high expectations, has often emphasized maintaining a winning dressing room-a mindset that, while effective, could put added pressure on players, particularly after a series loss.

For Virat Kohli, the upcoming Australia series could indeed be pivotal. Gambhir, eager to reassert India's dominance, may not hesitate to set clear performance expectations.

If India faces further setbacks, Kohli might be given an ultimatum, with Gambhir aiming to protect his own position while seeking accountability. This could be a turning point not just for Kohli but for the entire team, as India navigates this transition in leadership and approach.
