The India vs New Zealand rivalry in ICC events has become particularly compelling due to a combination of factors like high-stakes encounters and frequency in their meeting on the global stage.
India and New Zealand men's cricket teams have met in crucial knockout matches of major ICC tournaments, including the ODI World Cup semi-finals and the World Test Championship final.

This consistent presence in high-pressure situations has naturally built a strong sense of rivalry between the two teams. Apart from Australia, India may find New Zealand has their most toughest opponents in the ICC events. New Zealand also finds India a tough challenge.
The 2019 world cup semi final, and the 2023 world cup semi final are very good examples of their close contests. Many of their matches have been exceptionally close, leading to thrilling finishes and memorable moments.
India had failed to beat New Zealand in ICC tournaments for 20 years. The Kiwis had remained unbeaten in ICC events against the Indians until the ODI World Cup in 2023. The Black Caps held a 9-3 record against India in ICC events, across formats.
In the 20-year period, New Zealand knocked out India from the 2019 ODI World Cup and also handed them a telling loss in the 2021 T20 World Cup. In 2021, New Zealand also defeated India in the inaugural World Test Championship Final and in their only Champions Trophy meeting in 2000.
Overall, India and New Zealand have crossed paths in 16 matches - 11 times in ODI World Cup, 3 times in T20 World Cup and once each in the Champions Trophy and the ICC World Test Championship final. New Zealand holds an advantage of 10-5 against India in ICC events.
India-New Zealand rivalry dates back to 1975 in Manchester, when the Men in Blue fell to the Kiwis in their first-ever World Cup meeting before suffering a second successive loss in the next ODI World Cup in 1979.
India, however, bounced back and secured successive wins over New Zealand in the 1987 ODI World Cup group stages. The Kiwis then won in the next two meetings in the 1992 ODI World Cup group stage and the 1999 ODI World Cup Super Six round.
New Zealand also broke Indian hearts in the ICC Champions Trophy in the 2000 final. The Men in Blue later defeated New Zealand in the Super Six stage of the 2003 World Cup.
The Black Caps once again pulled off a string of wins, including the stunning win over India in the 2019 ODI World Cup rain-hit semi-final after their round-robin stage clash ended in No Result due to rain.
New Zealand also got the better of India in the shortest format during the period 2003 to 2021, beating the Men in Blue in the group stage of their title-winning 2007 T20 World Cup campaign, Super 10 match in 2016 and finally again in the 2021 group stage.
India responded by doing the double over the Black Caps in the 2023 World Cup, once in the round robin stage and again in the semifinal, ending the rivals' long domination in the ICC global events. The two teams have taken their rivalry even into bilateral meetings over the years.
