What Records can Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli create in India vs West Indies ODI Series?

India's three-match ODI series against the West Indies begins in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday with the focus inevitably falling on two of the biggest names in modern Indian cricket.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, now focused exclusively on the ODI format, return to action with the 2027 World Cup already forming part of the bigger picture.

The series is also an opportunity for both veterans to add several significant entries to their already remarkable record books. While Rohit is closing in on a landmark 12,000 ODI runs, Kohli is within touching distance of an even bigger numerical milestone.

Rohit Sharma: 105 runs away from 12,000 ODI runs

Rohit enters the series with 11,895 ODI runs from 288 matches and 280 innings, leaving him just 105 runs short of becoming only the third Indian and 15th overall batter to reach 12,000 runs in the format. Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli are the only Indian players currently above that mark.

The opener also has an excellent record against the West Indies. In 37 ODIs, Rohit has scored 1,613 runs at 57.60, including three centuries and 12 fifties. His highest score against them is 162.

Another milestone within reach is 10,000 ODI runs as an opener, a landmark that would further underline his longevity at the top of the order. The India veteran is just 135 runs away from that and would be only the second Indian to achieve that behind Sachin Tendulkar.

Virat Kohli: 59 runs from 15,000

Kohli's headline target is clear. The former India captain has 14,941 ODI runs and needs only 59 more to become the second men's batter after Sachin Tendulkar to reach 15,000. He could also become the fastest player to the landmark, having already reached 10,000 ODI runs in a record 205 innings.

The West Indies have traditionally been one of Kohli's favourite opponents. He has amassed 2,261 runs in 43 ODIs, averaging 66.50, with nine centuries and 11 fifties. One more century would also give him 10 ODI hundreds against the West Indies, making them only the second team, after Sri Lanka, against whom he has reached double figures for ODI centuries. Virat Kohli also has 41 ODI centuries on Indian soil, and would require two more to overtake Sachin Tendulkar's 42 tally.

With both veterans carrying substantial statistical targets into the series, the three ODIs offer more than World Cup preparation-they provide another chapter in two extraordinary ODI careers.
