What Zaheer Khan Brings to CSK: Three Areas That Could Revive Their IPL Fortunes

Chennai Super Kings have turned to Zaheer Khan to lead their coaching setup ahead of IPL 2027, bringing an end to Stephen Fleming's 18-year tenure and ushering in a new phase for the five-time champions. The former India fast bowler arrives with experience from Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants, but his biggest challenge will be translating his technical knowledge, tactical acumen and man-management skills into results at a franchise seeking to rediscover its winning identity.

Zaheer Khan

CSK finished 10th in 2025 and eighth in 2026, marking two difficult seasons for a team long associated with consistency and stability. With batting coach Michael Hussey and bowling coach Eric Simmons also departing, Zaheer faces the additional task of establishing a new coaching structure while helping captain Ruturaj Gaikwad navigate a demanding transition.

Here are three areas where Zaheer could make a difference at CSK.

1. Improving CSK's death-overs bowling

One of CSK's most pressing concerns heading into IPL 2027 is their execution at the death. The franchise struggled to contain opposition batters during the closing stages of IPL 2026, conceding 111 runs off the first 40 balls they bowled at the death at an economy rate of 16.65 - the worst in the tournament during that period.

Although their numbers improved as the season progressed, death bowling remains an area that requires attention. Zaheer's experience as a former international fast bowler could prove valuable in helping the attack develop clearer plans for the final five overs, particularly when dealing with set batters and high-pressure situations.

His understanding of bowling lengths, variations and field placements could also benefit Anshul Kamboj and Gurjapneet Singh, two Indian pacers who could gain from greater technical guidance and tactical clarity.

The challenge will be to turn that knowledge into consistent execution. CSK need bowlers who can adapt their plans to match situations rather than rely on variations without a clear strategy.

2. Developing CSK's young Indian core

Talent identification and player development could become another important part of Zaheer's brief. His previous roles as Mumbai Indians' Director of Cricket Operations and a member of Lucknow Super Giants' backroom staff have exposed him to different approaches to recruitment, preparation and squad building.

CSK have increasingly invested in young Indian players in recent seasons, with Ayush Mhatre and Kartik Sharma among the emerging names expected to benefit from the franchise's long-term approach. Zaheer's task will be to help such players develop their skills, understand their roles and become more dependable contributors at the IPL level.

His experience at Mumbai Indians also offers a glimpse of his approach to mentoring. Former MI assistant coach James Pamment has described Zaheer as a tactically astute figure who was particularly effective in one-to-one conversations, helping younger players think more deeply about the game and prepare for opportunities that might not come regularly.

That approach could be particularly useful at CSK, where role clarity and patience have traditionally been central to the team's philosophy. However, developing young players will require more than technical advice. Zaheer must also understand how different individuals learn, identify the support they need and work with the wider coaching staff to provide it.

MS Dhoni could remain an important part of that process. Although his playing status for IPL 2027 remains uncertain, his experience and continued involvement in the franchise's planning could complement Zaheer's work with the next generation.

3. Supporting Ruturaj Gaikwad and rebuilding team culture

Zaheer's appointment also presents an opportunity to strengthen the relationship between the head coach and captain. Ruturaj Gaikwad will need support in managing in-game adjustments, bowling changes and the development of a squad that has struggled to maintain its previous standards.

Zaheer's experience at Mumbai Indians suggests that building relationships and keeping the dressing room united could be among his strengths. Pamment recalled how Zaheer encouraged players who had limited opportunities to remain prepared, while also helping bring the group together away from the field.

That ability could be significant at CSK, particularly after two disappointing campaigns and a major change in the coaching structure. The franchise must restore confidence without abandoning the qualities that defined its most successful years.

Zaheer will also have to establish his authority in a more prominent role than the one he occupied at Mumbai Indians. There, Mahela Jayawardene was firmly in charge as head coach, while Zaheer contributed tactical insights and individual player guidance without overstepping his responsibilities.

At CSK, the final decisions and their consequences will rest much more heavily on him. He will need to make difficult selection calls, build a reliable support staff and ensure that the coaching group works towards a common plan.

His relationship with Dhoni could help ease the transition, but nostalgia alone will not restore CSK's fortunes. The key will be finding the right balance between the franchise's established culture and the changes required to make the team competitive again.

Can Zaheer lead CSK back to the top?

Zaheer arrives with a strong playing pedigree, experience in franchise management and a reputation for thoughtful tactical analysis. His greatest strengths may lie in helping bowlers improve their decision-making, mentoring young Indian talent and creating an environment in which players understand their roles.

Yet the transition from a supporting position to head coach brings a different set of demands. CSK need technical improvements, but they also need a coherent coaching structure and a clear direction after parting ways with several long-serving members of their backroom staff.

IPL 2027 will therefore be an important test of Zaheer's ability to turn his ideas into results. For a franchise accustomed to competing for titles, restoring consistency will be the first step towards reviving its championship ambitions.
