When MS Dhoni Lost His Cool for Chennai Super Kings: The IPL Moment That Shocked Everyone

There are few sights in cricket more unusual than MS Dhoni losing his composure. As the former India captain's future in the IPL ahead of 2027 season remains a discussion, Dhoni's impact on the franchise and on IPL is undeniable.

Although Dhoni is known for his composure, on April 11, 2019, during Chennai Super Kings' IPL clash against Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur, the usually calm captain walked onto the field and confronted the umpires during a chaotic final over.

Chasing 152, CSK were in serious trouble at 24/4 before Dhoni and Ambati Rayudu rebuilt the innings with a 95-run partnership. Rayudu scored 57, while Dhoni struck 58 off 43 balls, taking Chennai close to victory.

With 18 required from the final over, Dhoni was dismissed by Ben Stokes from the third ball, leaving CSK needing nine from three. Mitchell Santner then faced a waist-high full toss from Stokes. On-field umpire Ulhas Gandhe initially signalled a no-ball, but square-leg umpire Bruce Oxenford overturned the decision.

The confusion prompted Ravindra Jadeja to question the officials. Dhoni, watching from the dugout, then walked onto the field and animatedly argued with the umpires. The extraordinary incident briefly halted the match and became one of the defining controversies of IPL 2019.

Why did Dhoni enter the field?

CSK coach Stephen Fleming later explained that Dhoni was looking for clarity over the conflicting decisions rather than simply protesting the call. Fleming acknowledged that his captain was unusually fired up, saying the confusion surrounding the decision had prompted him to intervene.

Dhoni admitted to a Level 2 offence under the IPL Code of Conduct and was subsequently fined 50 per cent of his match fee.

Despite the drama, CSK completed an incredible comeback. Santner smashed a six off Stokes from the final ball to seal a four-wicket victory, giving Dhoni his 100th IPL win as captain.

How did CSK perform in IPL 2019?

The incident came during another remarkable campaign for Dhoni's CSK. The defending champions finished the league stage at the top of the table and reached their second consecutive IPL final.

CSK ultimately missed out on the trophy in one of IPL's closest finals. Mumbai Indians defeated them by just one run, defending 149 and restricting Chennai to 148/7 as Lasith Malinga's excellent last delivery cost CSK the title.

Dhoni was also one of CSK's leading performers, scoring 416 runs in 15 matches at an average of 83.20. It was also the year when Dhoni retired for India post the 2019 ODI World Cup.
