Gautam Gambhir has been appointed as the head coach of the Indian cricket team, BCCI secretary Jay Shah announced on Tuesday (July 9).
The former India player was a favourite in the job and has now set to become the next coach. He will succeed Rahul Dravid at the helm, who won the T20 World Cup in the swansong as the coach of the Indian team.

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah announced Gambhir's appointment on social media.
"It is with immense pleasure that I welcome Mr @GautamGambhir as the new Head Coach of the Indian Cricket Team. Modern-day cricket has evolved rapidly, and Gautam has witnessed this changing landscape up close. Having endured the grind and excelled in various roles throughout his career, I am confident that Gautam is the ideal person to steer Indian Cricket forward," Shah wrote on X.
Gambhir has had a superb track record as a mentor in IPL. He was mentor of the Lucknow Super Giants and they qualified for the playoffs in both of those seasons. Gambhir's pinnacle moment came for Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2024, when KKR won the IPL title under his guidance.
Gautam Gambhir's first assignment as the India head coach will be the upcoming Sri Lanka series, which starts from July 27.
Gautam Gambhir will be joining the team ahead of the Sri Lanka series. He is expected to fly with the team to the island country ahead of the six-match limited-overs series, where India will play 3 ODIs and 3 T20Is. He is likely to have a say in the squad announcement for the series as well.
