‘When You’re Not Getting Games…’: Kuldeep Yadav Opens Up on Staying Match-Ready Despite Limited Chances
India spinner Kuldeep Yadav has opened up about the challenges of staying match-ready despite limited opportunities during the T20 World Cup, highlighting how preparation and mindset played a key role in keeping him ready for the IPL.
Kuldeep featured in just one match during India's triumphant T20 World Cup campaign, but the left-arm wrist spinner maintained his involvement with the team throughout the tournament. Ahead of Delhi Capitals' IPL 2026 clash against Mumbai Indians, he reflected on the importance of staying prepared even when chances are limited.

Kuldeep Yadav on Preparation
Kuldeep admitted that being on the bench can be frustrating, but emphasised that preparation becomes even more important during such phases.
"Preparation becomes crucial, especially when you're not getting games."
He explained that his focus during the tournament remained on ensuring there were no gaps in his routine.
"I made sure there was no gap in my preparation so that whenever an opportunity came, I was ready," Kuldeep said ahead of the Delhi Capitals vs Mumbai Indians clash.
The spinner also highlighted the importance of maintaining a match-ready mindset, regardless of whether one is in the playing XI.
"Even if you're not playing, being with the team, attending practice sessions, and maintaining that match-ready mindset is important. Whether you play or not, your approach should always be that you're ready for the next game."
Confidence Built Through Routine and Planning
Kuldeep stressed that confidence does not come overnight but is built through consistent training and preparation.
"Confidence comes from preparation. If your training and routines are in place, you will naturally feel confident, even though a bit of nervousness is always there," he said.
He also spoke about the tactical side of spin bowling, noting how planning against batters remains an ongoing process.
"Planning against batters is constant; you assess where they want to score and how they might approach you. With new batters, it becomes more challenging, but overall, preparation is what builds confidence."
Kuldeep, now 31, expressed his determination to make a strong impact in IPL 2026, where he has already begun delivering steady performances.
Backing His Strengths in the T20 Format
The Delhi Capitals spinner also highlighted the importance of sticking to one's strengths, particularly in high-scoring formats like T20 cricket.
"It's very important for spinners to hold on to their strengths. Whenever batters put you under pressure, you tend to forget your strength. You look for a safer option to get out of that situation," Kuldeep said.
He emphasised the need for attacking intent, especially for bowlers who rely on wicket-taking deliveries.
"If you are an attacking spinner, don't let that go. Because that is your identity, and if you are doing that work for the team, taking wickets, there can be nothing better than that. Your mindset should be attacking."
Kuldeep also addressed the reality of modern T20 cricket, where high-scoring games are increasingly common.
"Young spinners think that these are high-scoring matches and runs will be hit. Yes, you will be hit for runs because this is the T20 format. But you have to plan accordingly and be ready. It is not necessary that in four overs you will concede 40-45 runs. If there is a player who dominates, then it happens, or the wicket is very good for batting," he added.
Having already made an early impact in IPL 2026, Kuldeep's focus remains firmly on contributing consistently for Delhi Capitals.
His reflections on preparation and mindset underline a broader truth in modern cricket - success often depends not just on performance during matches, but on the discipline maintained away from the spotlight.
