Which ICC consequences can happen to Bangladesh if they withdraw from T20 World Cup 2026?

By MyKhel Staff

Despite repeated talks with the International Cricket Council, Bangladesh remain firm in their stance of not playing the T20 World Cup on Indian soil.

After ICC had given them a 24-hour deadline following the verdict of rejecting BCB's demands, the Bangladesh Cricket Board has reaffirmed their decision.

Which ICC consequences can happen to Bangladesh if they withdraw from T20 World Cup 2026

"We will go back to the ICC with our plan to play in Sri Lanka. They did give us a 24 hour ultimatum but a global body can't really do that. ICC will miss out on 200 million people watching the World Cup. It will be their loss ... ICC is calling Sri Lanka co-hosts. They are not co-hosts. It is a hybrid model. Some of the things I heard in the ICC meeting was shocking," BCB president Aminul Islam said on Thursday.

Amid this, the ICC is likely not to bow down to Bangladesh's demands, which will eventually result in their expulsion from the T20 World Cup. Scotland is in line to replace them in the World Cup if Bangladesh don't travel to India. But despite the withdrawal, the ramifications of this rebel act from Bangladesh may not be limited to a World Cup miss, but it may have strict consequences from the apex body of international cricket. A pullout would trigger a cascade of financial, competitive, and diplomatic penalties under ICC rules.

Financial Losses

The BCB stands to forfeit $500,000 to $750,000 in group-stage participation fees, with additional prize money losses of $1 million to $2.5 million if Bangladesh advanced to Super 8s or semifinals. ICC's Member Participation Agreement allows fines up to $2 million for post-commitment withdrawals, alongside cuts to annual revenue shares of $17 million to $20 million under the 2024-2027 cycle.

Competitive Setbacks

Scotland would replace Bangladesh in Group B based on rankings, preserving tournament integrity. Bangladesh would surrender ranking points essential for automatic qualification to future events like the next World Cup and Champions Trophy, potentially relegating them to qualifiers against lower-tier associates. Hosting rights for ICC global events could also evaporate, eroding local infrastructure and sponsorship deals.

Diplomatic Fallout

Strained ties with the BCCI might end bilateral series between India and Bangladesh indefinitely. If deemed "politically motivated" rather than a genuine security issue, ICC could suspend the BCB outright, halting national team activities and international engagements.

Sanctions

If ICC decides so, it can also take a significant step against Bangladesh, which may have suspension from a couple of future tournaments. They may have to also face qualifiers for the next edition's T20 World Cup. Out of the ICC members, only two voted in theif favour, which further demonstrates how isolated BCB may become if ICC decide to stamp its authority.
