Who Has The Edge In Future 'GOAT' Battle Between Shubman Gill And Yashasvi Jaiswal? Ex India Star Dissects

By MyKhel Staff

As Indian cricket gears up for the post-Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma era, former cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar anticipates an intense rivalry between young talents Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal for the title of India's next 'GOAT'.

Both players have displayed immense potential, but their journeys and current roles in the national team highlight contrasting narratives.

Shubman Gill Yashasvi Jaiswal

While Yashasvi Jaiswal has cemented his place as India's first-choice Test opener, Shubman Gill has found his niche in the ODI format, also serving as vice-captain. Despite Jaiswal's limited opportunities in white-ball cricket, his Test performances have been nothing short of spectacular. On the other hand, Gill, though consistent in ODIs, has struggled to fully capitalize on his Test chances, with the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia exposing some of his limitations.

"Before the Australia series, Shubman Gill was my No. 1 choice alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal as India's future hope. I think both of them will compete against each other, and we'll see who prevails," Manjrekar said on Star Sports.

Manjrekar highlighted Jaiswal's hunger for runs and his adaptability across conditions as key traits that could elevate him to legendary status. "People who have watched him closely think he's one for the future. The way he's started-scoring big runs-shows his hunger. He's not just content with a hundred in Test cricket; he's getting big hundreds. He has a greed for runs at the highest level. If you want him to play for a draw, he can do that too. He plays late, uses the back foot well, and is capable of scoring on foreign pitches. That's the most important trait for a GOAT," he added.

Gill's prowess in white-ball cricket remains undisputed, but Manjrekar believes Jaiswal's potential in limited-overs formats is yet to be fully explored. "Shubman Gill will continue dominating in white-ball cricket. We haven't seen Yashasvi dominate outside Tests yet, but that world is there for him to capture. He has the ability, and he'll show it when he gets the opportunity," Manjrekar observed.

As both young stars continue to develop, their performances will undoubtedly shape the future of Indian cricket. Whether it's Gill's elegance in ODIs or Jaiswal's grit in Tests, the race to become India's next GOAT promises to be an enthralling journey.
